Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything
My name is Ethan Carter.
I'm thirty-three years old, and until six months ago, I believed I understood exactly who my family was.
I was wrong.
If someone had told me that the people I trusted most would one day force me to choose between my wife and the family that raised me, I would have laughed in their face.
Now, I wish they had warned me sooner.
It started with a phone call.
I was reviewing blueprints in my office when my wife, Olivia, called for the third time in less than ten minutes.
She never interrupted me at work unless it was important.
The moment I answered, I heard nothing.
No greeting.
No words.
Only heavy breathing.
"Olivia?"
Silence.
Then a whisper so faint I almost missed it.
"Ethan... please come home."
The call ended.
I immediately dialed back.
Straight to voicemail.
A strange feeling settled in my chest.
Olivia wasn't emotional.
She wasn't the type to panic.
If she said she needed me, something was seriously wrong.
I grabbed my keys and left without explaining anything to my coworkers.
The drive home usually took forty-five minutes.
I made it in twenty-eight.
Every red light felt like an eternity.
Every passing second filled my mind with possibilities I desperately hoped weren't true.
Maybe she had fallen.
Maybe our six-month-old son, Noah, was sick.
Maybe...
I refused to think of anything worse.
As I pulled into our driveway, I noticed something unusual.
My mother's car.
She hadn't mentioned visiting.
In fact, Olivia told me that morning she planned to spend the entire day alone with Noah.
I frowned.
My mother had always believed she didn't need permission to stop by.
She called it "checking on family."
Olivia called it "never having privacy."
I'd convinced myself it was nothing more than personality differences.
Looking back...
That was my first mistake.
The front door wasn't locked.
I stepped inside.
The house was unnaturally quiet.
Too quiet.
No television.
No music.
No baby laughter.
No conversation.
Only the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway.
"Olivia?"
No answer.
I walked farther inside.
The dining table was beautifully set.
Fresh flowers.
Three dinner plates.
Crystal glasses.
Candles waiting to be lit.
It looked less like an ordinary dinner...
...and more like a celebration.
Except no one was smiling.
Then I heard it.
A muffled cry.
It came from upstairs.
I ran.
My heartbeat echoed louder than my footsteps.
When I reached Noah's nursery, my stomach dropped.
The crib was empty.
The blanket was still warm.
His favorite stuffed elephant lay on the floor.
But my son...
was gone.
"NOAH!"
I searched every corner of the room.
Closet.
Bathroom.
Hallway.
Nothing.
Then I heard another sound.
A soft knock.
Three quick taps.
Coming from the guest bedroom.
I threw the door open.
Olivia was sitting on the floor.
Her wrists weren't tied.
The door hadn't even been locked.
Yet she looked terrified.
Tears streamed down her face.
She immediately raised one finger to her lips.
"Don't say anything," she whispered.
I rushed toward her.
"What happened? Where's Noah?"
Instead of answering, she grabbed my hand so tightly it hurt.
"They're listening."
My blood turned cold.
"They?"
She slowly pointed upward.
The attic.
Before I could ask another question...
Heavy footsteps echoed directly above us.
Someone was walking across the attic floor.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Olivia's face turned completely white.
Then she whispered the sentence that changed everything.
"Your mother didn't come here alone."
At that exact moment...
The attic door creaked open.
Something heavy began descending the folding ladder.
Neither of us moved.
Neither of us breathed.
May you like
Because whoever was upstairs...
was finally coming down.
