Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile

Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile

For several seconds, I remained frozen, staring at the silent phone in my hand.

Maya's final words echoed through my mind.

"She wasn't trying to destroy me... She was trying to protect someone else."

Protect who?

The question refused to leave me.

Daniel's voice came through my office speaker.

"Ryan?"

I blinked.

"I'm here."

"What happened?"

I slowly lowered myself into my chair.

"Maya just called from the county jail."

"And?"

"She said Vivian framed her to protect someone else."

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his tone was colder than before.

"That changes everything."

"It also makes no sense."

"Not yet."

I rubbed my forehead.

"I've known Vivian for almost ten years."

Daniel sighed.

"No."

"You've known the version of Vivian she wanted you to see."

That afternoon I canceled every meeting on my calendar.

The board could survive one day without me.

My sons couldn't.

I picked Ethan and Caleb up from school myself.

Normally they would race across the playground.

Today they walked quietly toward my SUV.

Neither smiled.

Neither asked for ice cream.

Neither argued about music.

Children recover quickly from scraped knees.

Not from betrayal.

Halfway home, Caleb suddenly asked from the back seat.

"Dad..."

"Yes, buddy?"

"Is Maya sleeping in jail?"

The innocence in his voice nearly broke me.

"I don't know."

"Is she cold?"

"I hope not."

He looked out the window.

"She always put an extra blanket on me when I got cold."

Ethan finally spoke.

"Can we visit her?"

"I'll try."

"What if they don't let us?"

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

"They will."

Even as I said it, I wasn't certain.

That evening, after putting the boys to bed, I quietly entered the storage room connected to the garage.

The family security server was mounted inside a locked cabinet.

I inserted the administrator key.

The screen loaded.

Something immediately caught my attention.

There were gaps.

Small ones.

Only a few minutes each.

But they hadn't existed yesterday.

Someone had deleted footage.

My heartbeat accelerated.

I checked the system log.

Administrator Access.

Time: 11:43 a.m.

User: Home Owner.

Only two people had administrator privileges.

Me.

And Vivian.

I hadn't touched the system.

Which meant...

Someone had erased evidence only hours after I reviewed the recordings.

A chill spread across my shoulders.

She knew.

Maybe she hadn't seen me reviewing the cameras.

Maybe she simply feared there was something she had overlooked.

Either way...

She was cleaning up.

The next morning Daniel arrived before sunrise.

He carried a laptop and a black equipment case.

"I brought someone."

A young woman stepped out behind him.

"This is Olivia."

She smiled politely.

"Digital forensics."

Within minutes she connected specialized recovery software to the security server.

We waited.

Progress bar.

Twenty percent.

Forty-three.

Seventy-eight.

Finally...

Recovered Files Found.

Olivia looked impressed.

"Your wife deleted more than video."

Daniel looked at her.

"What else?"

She turned the monitor toward us.

"There were photographs."

"Photographs?"

She opened the first recovered image.

It showed Maya's employee locker.

The second.

Maya's bedroom inside the staff quarters.

The third.

The zipper of Maya's backpack.

Every photograph carried the same timestamp.

Less than ten minutes before police arrived.

Someone had carefully documented everything.

Almost like...

Preparing evidence.

Daniel folded his arms.

"That's not normal."

Olivia shook her head.

"No."

She enlarged one image.

"There."

Near the corner of the locker door.

A reflection.

Tiny.

Barely visible.

But unmistakable.

Vivian.

Holding her phone.

Taking the photographs herself.

My stomach turned.

That afternoon I finally received permission to visit Maya.

She looked exhausted.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

The orange jail uniform looked painfully out of place on the gentle woman my sons adored.

She tried to smile.

"I'm sorry they had to see all this."

"You should be apologizing to yourself."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"They must hate me."

"They don't."

I leaned forward.

"They've been asking for you every day."

She covered her mouth as tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I miss them so much."

For several moments neither of us spoke.

Finally I asked,

"What did you mean on the phone?"

She hesitated.

"I don't know if I should say."

"You have to."

She looked toward the security camera inside the interview room.

Then lowered her voice.

"Three weeks ago..."

"I accidentally walked into the east hallway."

"The hallway near the guest suite?"

She nodded.

"I heard Vivian arguing with a man."

"What man?"

"I never saw his face."

"What were they arguing about?"

Maya swallowed.

"They kept talking about money."

"How much?"

"I heard two million dollars."

I frowned.

Two million?

That number meant nothing to me.

Then Maya continued.

"The man kept saying..."

She closed her eyes, remembering.

"'If Ryan finds out whose child that really is, everything is over.'"

The air left my lungs.

"My... child?"

"I don't know what they meant."

She shook her head desperately.

"I swear I don't."

"But Vivian saw me standing there."

"And after that..."

Her voice cracked.

"Everything changed."

Driving home, I couldn't stop thinking.

Whose child?

The boys were identical twins.

I had been present at their birth.

I had signed every document.

Surely...

No.

Impossible.

Unless...

My phone rang.

Daniel.

"I've got something."

"What?"

"I looked into Vivian's finances."

"And?"

"There are payments."

"To who?"

"I don't know yet."

"How much?"

"Five hundred thousand dollars every six months."

I nearly slammed on the brakes.

"What?"

"They've been happening for six years."

Six years.

The twins had just turned six.

A horrifying connection began forming inside my mind.

"Daniel..."

"I'm thinking the same thing."

Someone had been receiving enormous amounts of money since the year my sons were born.

Regular.

Predictable.

Silent.

Blackmail.

That evening Vivian hosted one of her charity dinners.

The mansion filled with politicians, surgeons, investors, and socialites.

Everyone admired her elegance.

Everyone praised her generosity.

No one saw what I saw.

Every smile felt rehearsed.

Every laugh sounded calculated.

At one point she crossed the ballroom carrying a tray of champagne.

She kissed my cheek.

"You've been quiet lately."

"Busy."

She searched my eyes.

"Is something bothering you?"

I smiled politely.

"No."

For the first time in our marriage...

I lied to her.

Near midnight, after the guests finally left, I walked upstairs toward the twins' bedrooms.

The hallway was dark.

Too dark.

One bedroom door stood slightly open.

Caleb was asleep.

But Ethan's bed...

Was empty.

My pulse exploded.

"Ethan?"

No answer.

I searched the bathroom.

Closet.

Playroom.

Nothing.

Then I heard it.

A tiny sound.

From downstairs.

I hurried toward the grand staircase.

At the bottom stood Ethan.

Completely still.

Facing the front door.

His small hand rested on the doorknob.

"Dad..."

he whispered without turning around.

I rushed to him.

"What are you doing?"

He looked up at me.

His face had gone completely white.

"I heard Mommy talking."

"Talking to who?"

He slowly raised one trembling finger toward the security monitor beside the entrance.

"The man on the screen."

I looked up.

The exterior camera showed a black SUV parked across the street.

Its headlights were off.

Engine running.

Inside sat a man wearing a baseball cap.

The moment our eyes met through the monitor...

He smiled.

Then he slowly lifted one hand.

Not to wave.

To point directly at my son.

A second later...

My phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

May you like

One new message.

"Stop asking questions... or the boys disappear next."
