PART 4: THE MOTHER WHO NEVER LOVED ME

The footsteps grew louder.

Slow.

Controlled.

Confident.

The same way Linda walked through every room she entered.

Like she owned it.

Like everyone inside was already under her control.

My entire childhood flashed through my mind.

Her holding my hand when I was afraid.

Her making my favorite meals.

Her sitting beside my bed when I was sick.

The woman who raised me.

The woman I called Mom.

And now she was standing above us, hunting for me.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

"We need to leave."

I looked at the hidden room.

The files.

The recordings.

The proof of everything I had been searching for.

"We can't leave this."

Sarah shook her head.

"Daniel, listen to me."

Her voice trembled.

"Your mother is not here to talk."

I stared at the basement door.

"How do you know?"

Sarah's eyes filled with pain.

"Because I know what she does when she loses control."

A chill went through me.

"What did she do?"

Sarah looked away.

"She destroys anything that threatens her."

The basement door opened.

A light appeared on the stairs.

Then Linda's voice came again.

"Daniel."

A pause.

"I know you're scared."

I almost laughed.

Scared?

My entire world had collapsed in one night.

My wife left.

My son was gone.

My identity was a lie.

And the woman who raised me had been hiding the truth for decades.

Yes.

I was scared.

But I was also angry.

Very angry.

I stepped toward the stairs.

Sarah grabbed my hand.

"No."

I looked at her.

"She needs to answer me."

"Daniel..."

"No."

My voice became firm.

"For my entire life, everyone has decided what I should know."

"My father."

"You."

"Evelyn."

"Linda."

I looked toward the door.

"I'm done being protected."

I walked upstairs.

Sarah followed behind me.

The moment I entered the living room, I saw her.

Linda.

Standing beside the fireplace.

Perfectly dressed.

Calm.

Almost elegant.

Like this was just another family dinner.

Not the night she was exposed.

Not the night her entire secret collapsed.

She looked at me.

And for a second...

I saw sadness.

Not guilt.

Sadness.

"Daniel."

I stared at her.

"Why?"

She took a slow breath.

"Because I knew this day would come."

My jaw tightened.

"You knew?"

She nodded.

"I always knew."

The answer shocked me.

"You knew I would find out?"

"Eventually."

I stepped closer.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Her expression changed.

"Because you would hate me."

I laughed.

"You think?"

Linda looked toward Sarah.

The hatred between them was immediate.

"You brought him here."

Sarah shook her head.

"No."

"You did this."

Linda's eyes narrowed.

"I protected him."

Sarah's voice became sharp.

"You stole him."

The room became silent.

I looked between them.

"Enough."

Both women stopped.

I pointed at Linda.

"You first."

Then Sarah.

"You too."

I took a breath.

"I want the truth."

Linda sat down.

For the first time in my life, she looked old.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just tired.

"I did not steal you because I wanted to hurt Sarah."

I stared.

"Then why?"

She looked at me.

"Because I loved you."

The words should have comforted me.

They didn't.

"Love doesn't look like this."

Her eyes filled.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain."

She looked down.

"Your father was involved in something dangerous."

I almost laughed.

"Everyone says that."

"No."

Her voice became serious.

"Your father was trying to expose people who would kill for their secrets."

I looked at Sarah.

Then back at Linda.

"And you were one of them?"

Linda's face changed.

Pain.

"Daniel..."

"Answer me."

"No."

She shook her head.

"I was trying to stop them."

I froze.

"What?"

Linda continued.

"I knew what they were planning."

"Who?"

She hesitated.

Then said:

"People inside your father's company."

My stomach tightened.

"The company I inherited?"

She nodded.

"Yes."

"People who wanted control."

"People who believed your father had become a problem."

I thought about everything.

My career.

My success.

My company.

The empire I built.

Was it all connected to this?

"Why me?"

Linda looked at me.

"Because Robert trusted you."

I frowned.

"I was a child."

"Exactly."

Silence.

"Nobody would suspect a child."

I felt sick.

"What are you saying?"

She looked at Sarah.

"Your father hid something before he disappeared."

"The evidence."

I nodded.

"The evidence everyone keeps talking about."

Linda looked at me.

"He didn't hide it in a safe."

"Or a bank."

"Or a computer."

"Where?"

Her eyes met mine.

"In you."

The room went silent.

I felt a cold wave move through my body.

"What?"

Linda swallowed.

"Robert knew someone would search for the evidence."

"So he hid the only thing they couldn't take."

I stared.

"My memory?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Your identity."

I didn't understand.

And then Sarah spoke.

"Daniel."

Her voice was quiet.

"Your father discovered something about your birth."

I looked at her.

"What?"

Sarah stepped closer.

"He knew you were the connection between two families."

"What families?"

She looked at Linda.

Then at herself.

"Mine and hers."

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

"My birth?"

Linda looked away.

"Daniel..."

"No."

I pointed at her.

"You don't get to say my name like you still have the right."

She flinched.

Good.

Because for the first time...

I wanted her to feel what Evelyn felt.

The pain of not being heard.

"Tell me."

Linda closed her eyes.

"Sarah was your biological mother."

"I know."

"But Robert was not your biological father."

Silence.

The words didn't make sense.

"What?"

Sarah looked down.

"I was married before."

I stared.

"To who?"

Neither woman answered.

And somehow...

That terrified me more.

Finally, Linda whispered:

"Daniel Voss."

The room disappeared.

Daniel Voss.

The man who kidnapped my son.

The man who destroyed Sarah's life.

The man who had been connected to everything.

My biological father.

"No."

Sarah stepped forward.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

I backed away.

"You're lying."

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"I wish I was."

The basement suddenly shook.

A loud crash.

Everyone turned.

Someone had broken into the house.

Linda's face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not an act.

Not manipulation.

Fear.

"He's here."

I looked at her.

"Who?"

She whispered:

"Daniel."

The lights went out.

Darkness covered the room.

Then a voice came from the doorway.

A voice I remembered from the warehouse.

Calm.

Cold.

Controlled.

"Family reunions are always emotional."

The lights flickered back on.

Daniel Voss stood there.

But this time...

He wasn't looking at Sarah.

He wasn't looking at Linda.

He was looking at me.

"My son."

The words made my blood freeze.

Behind me, Sarah grabbed my arm.

Linda stepped forward.

"Don't touch him."

Daniel smiled.

"Still protecting him after all these years?"

Linda's expression hardened.

"You lost."

Daniel laughed.

"No."

He looked at me.

"I finally found him."

I stared at the man who had destroyed my life.

The man who had taken my son.

The man who claimed to be my father.

And then he said the one sentence that changed everything:

"Daniel, your wife never took Lucas to protect him."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Daniel smiled.

"She took him because she knows what you really are."

I froze.

"What are you talking about?"

He stepped closer.

"Ask Evelyn why she never told you the truth about Lucas."

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Evelyn.

One sentence.

"Daniel, don't believe anything they tell you. Especially the truth about Lucas."

I stared at the screen.

My son.

My wife.

My family.

Everything was becoming another mystery.

May you like

And the most terrifying question appeared:

What was Evelyn hiding about Lucas?
