Chapter 3: The Truth No One Saw Coming

Sierra’s sobs filled the dining room.

“No… please… Daniel, let me explain…”

Daniel stared at her like he was looking at a stranger.

His breathing became ragged.

“Explain what?” he demanded. “Explain how you lied to me? Explain how you made me destroy my marriage for a child that isn’t even mine?”

Sierra shook uncontrollably.

“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

Naomi stood near the dining chair, her baby asleep against her chest, watching the chaos unfold with cold silence.

Just minutes ago, she had been the one trembling.

Now the entire room had shifted.

Barbara’s face had gone white.

Her hands gripped the edge of the table.

“This… this is impossible.”

Naomi glanced at her mother-in-law.

“No, Barbara. This is truth.”

Barbara’s jaw tightened.

“No,” she snapped. “There must be some mistake.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

That laugh carried years of pain.

“You still don’t get it, do you, Mom?”

Barbara turned.

“What are you talking about?”

Daniel’s eyes burned with anger.

“You spent years blaming Naomi.”

He pointed toward Naomi.

“You made her feel small because we weren’t having another child.”

Barbara’s lips trembled.

“I only wanted—”

“You wanted an heir,” Daniel interrupted. “You wanted perfection. You wanted control.”

His voice rose.

“And when the fertility tests came back…”

He stopped.

Barbara frowned.

“When what came back?”

Daniel’s silence felt heavy.

Naomi already knew.

Sierra looked confused.

Barbara slowly turned pale.

No.

No.

She didn’t want to hear it.

Daniel swallowed hard.

“The fertility issue wasn’t Naomi.”

Barbara whispered—

“…What?”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“It was me.”

The words shattered whatever illusion Barbara still held.

“No…”

Barbara shook her head.

“That’s not possible.”

“It is.”

“You’re lying.”

Daniel slammed his hand onto the table.

“WHY WOULD I LIE ABOUT THIS?”

The crystal glasses rattled.

The baby stirred but Naomi gently soothed the child.

Barbara stared at her son, horrified.

“No… my son is healthy.”

Daniel’s voice turned cold.

“The doctors confirmed it.”

Barbara whispered again.

“No…”

Naomi watched her carefully.

Barbara wasn’t just shocked.

She looked… terrified.

Naomi narrowed her eyes.

Something was wrong.

Something deeper.

Daniel continued.

“I didn’t tell you because I knew what you’d do.”

Barbara looked away.

“I would have helped.”

“No,” Daniel said. “You would have blamed Naomi.”

Silence.

Because everyone knew he was right.

Sierra suddenly cried louder.

“This isn’t fair!”

All eyes turned to her.

Her mascara ran down her cheeks.

“You’re all acting like I’m the villain!”

Naomi raised an eyebrow.

Sierra’s voice shook.

“I loved you, Daniel!”

Daniel stared.

“Loved me?”

“Yes!”

“You manipulated me.”

“No!”

“You lied.”

“I was scared!”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Whose child is it?”

Sierra froze.

No answer.

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“Tell me.”

She trembled.

Still silent.

Barbara snapped.

“ANSWER HIM!”

Sierra flinched.

And then—

she whispered.

“…Mark.”

Silence.

Daniel frowned.

“Mark?”

Naomi searched her memory.

Then her blood ran cold.

Mark.

No.

Not him.

Barbara’s expression collapsed.

She staggered backward.

“No…”

Naomi stared.

Barbara knew that name.

Daniel frowned.

“Who is Mark?”

Sierra covered her face.

Barbara whispered in horror—

“No… no, no, no…”

Daniel grabbed Sierra’s shoulders.

“WHO IS MARK?”

Sierra screamed.

“YOUR FATHER!”

Silence exploded.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Daniel released her like he’d touched fire.

“What?”

His voice barely existed.

Sierra collapsed into a chair, sobbing.

Naomi felt chills.

Barbara looked seconds away from collapse.

Daniel stared at Sierra.

Blank.

Uncomprehending.

Then—

“No.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Sierra cried harder.

“It started months ago.”

Daniel’s face twisted.

“No!”

Barbara screamed.

“SHUT UP!”

But Sierra kept talking.

As if years of guilt had finally burst open.

“He came to my apartment after that charity gala…”

Barbara lunged toward her.

“Stop talking!”

Daniel blocked his mother.

“No.”

His voice became deadly quiet.

“No, she talks.”

Sierra’s body shook.

“He said you were distant… that you didn’t understand him… that Barbara controlled everything…”

Naomi watched the nightmare unfold.

This had become something no one could have imagined.

Sierra continued.

“I was drunk… he was drunk…”

Barbara screamed.

“LIAR!”

But Sierra yelled back—

“I HAVE PROOF!”

Silence.

Everyone froze.

Sierra reached into her purse.

Hands shaking.

She pulled out her phone.

Opened photos.

Videos.

Messages.

She placed it on the table.

Daniel looked.

And stopped breathing.

There was his father.

Mark Carter.

Hotel selfies.

Text messages.

Romantic words.

Videos.

No denying it.

Barbara saw the screen.

Her legs gave out.

She collapsed.

“No…”

Naomi’s heart pounded.

Daniel looked like he might shatter.

His father.

His mistress.

The unborn child.

All connected.

The betrayal went deeper than anyone imagined.

Sierra whispered.

“He promised he’d leave Barbara.”

Barbara burst into hysterical laughter.

A terrifying sound.

“Leave me?”

She looked insane.

“That coward?”

She laughed harder.

Then suddenly—

she stopped.

Too suddenly.

Naomi noticed it first.

Barbara’s expression changed.

No grief.

No heartbreak.

Just… emptiness.

Then Barbara said something that froze everyone.

“I already knew.”

Silence.

Daniel slowly turned.

“What?”

Sierra blinked.

“What did you say?”

Barbara looked at them.

Calm.

Too calm.

“I said…”

She lifted her chin.

“I already knew.”

Naomi felt a chill crawl up her spine.

Daniel stared in disbelief.

“You knew Dad was sleeping with Sierra?”

Barbara nodded once.

“Yes.”

Sierra whispered—

“No…”

Daniel stepped back.

“What kind of monster are you?”

Barbara’s eyes hardened.

“Do not judge me.”

Daniel shouted.

“You LET THIS HAPPEN?”

Barbara stood.

Slowly.

Regally.

Like a queen addressing fools.

“You think I care about affairs?”

She laughed bitterly.

“Men cheat.”

Naomi felt disgust twist inside her.

Barbara continued.

“But family legacy matters.”

Daniel looked sick.

“What are you saying?”

Barbara’s voice sharpened.

“I needed an heir.”

Naomi’s stomach dropped.

No.

No way.

Barbara looked directly at Sierra.

“When I learned Daniel couldn’t produce one…”

She paused.

“…I made arrangements.”

The room turned ice cold.

Daniel whispered.

“No…”

Barbara continued.

“I introduced Sierra to Mark.”

Sierra stared in horror.

“No…”

Barbara ignored her.

“I told Mark what needed to happen.”

Naomi stopped breathing.

Daniel looked broken.

Barbara had orchestrated this.

All of it.

The affair.

The pregnancy.

The destruction of Naomi’s marriage.

Everything.

To produce an heir.

Barbara’s expression remained merciless.

“I did what was necessary.”

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“You’re insane.”

Barbara’s eyes flashed.

“I protected this family.”

Naomi finally spoke.

“No.”

Barbara looked at her.

Naomi’s voice was calm.

“You destroyed it.”

Barbara glared.

Naomi stepped forward.

Holding her baby.

Standing taller than ever.

“For years, I thought you hated me because I wasn’t enough.”

She smiled sadly.

“But now I see the truth.”

Barbara frowned.

Naomi looked directly into her eyes.

“You don’t love family.”

She paused.

“You only love control.”

Silence.

Barbara’s face twitched.

Because Naomi had hit the truth.

Daniel looked at Naomi.

And for the first time in years—

he saw her clearly.

Strong.

Brave.

Unbreakable.

And he realized something devastating.

He had chosen wrong.

Terribly wrong.

Tears filled his eyes.

“Naomi…”

She didn’t look at him.

It was too late.

Far too late.

Then—

a voice came from the doorway.

Cold.

Male.

Dangerous.

“No one moves.”

Everyone turned.

Standing there—

was Mark.

Mark Carter.

And in his hand…

May you like

was a gun.

To be continued…
