Part 5: The Secret About the Baby Caleb Used as a Weapon

Part 5: The Secret About the Baby Caleb Used as a Weapon

I stood in my driveway long after Caleb’s car disappeared down the street.

His final words kept repeating in my mind.

"Ask your sister why she never told you about the baby."

At first, I thought it was another manipulation.

Another attempt to make me doubt myself.

That was what people like Caleb did.

They created confusion.

They dropped small pieces of information and waited for fear to do the rest.

But something about the way he said it was different.

He wasn't guessing.

He was confident.

Almost relieved.

Like he believed he still had one secret powerful enough to control us.

When I walked back inside, Mara was sitting on the couch.

She immediately looked at my face.

"What happened?"

I closed the door behind me.

"Caleb came here."

Her body went tense.

"What did he want?"

I sat across from her.

"To warn me."

Her eyes dropped.

"About what?"

I studied her carefully.

Then I asked the question I didn't want to ask.

"Why didn't you tell me about the baby?"

The color drained from her face.

For several seconds, she didn't move.

Didn't blink.

Didn't breathe.

And that reaction told me everything.

There was something.

"Lena..."

Her voice was barely audible.

"I was going to tell you."

"When?"

She looked down.

"I don't know."

I felt my chest tighten.

"Mara, what does he know?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"I didn't want you involved."

I leaned forward.

"Too late."

She shook her head.

"No, you don't understand."

Her hands moved protectively over her stomach.

"Caleb said if I told anyone, he would make sure I lost everything."

My jaw tightened.

"Everything?"

She nodded.

"The baby."

The room went silent.

I forced myself to stay calm.

Because anger was easy.

Control was harder.

And I needed control.

"What exactly did he threaten?"

Mara wiped her tears.

"He said he had lawyers who could prove I was unstable."

"That I was emotional."

"That pregnancy hormones made me unreliable."

I had heard versions of that argument before.

A person trying to turn someone's pain into evidence against them.

"He told me nobody would believe me."

Mara whispered.

"He said people would see him as the successful husband trying to protect his pregnant wife."

"And they would see me as the problem."

I closed my eyes for a moment.

Because that was the cruelest part.

Caleb wasn't only hurting her.

He was preparing a story.

"What about the baby?"

Mara looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

"Why did he mention the baby specifically?"

She hesitated.

Then slowly reached for her phone.

"I found something."

She opened a folder.

Inside was a screenshot.

A message from Caleb.

My eyes moved across the screen.

"You should remember who controls the future of this child."

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

"When did he send this?"

"Two weeks ago."

"Why didn't you show anyone?"

She laughed sadly.

"Because I was scared."

I didn't blame her.

Fear changes people.

It makes them hide things they would normally reveal.

It makes them believe surviving one more day is the same as living.

"Mara."

She looked at me.

"Did Caleb ever hurt you while you were pregnant?"

Her silence answered before her words did.

Finally, she whispered:

"Yes."

My hands tightened.

"When?"

"Not like before."

"Explain."

"He never hit my stomach."

"But he grabbed me."

"He pushed me."

"He would block the door when he was angry."

I wrote everything down.

Dates.

Times.

Details.

Not because I wanted to treat my sister like a case.

Because I knew something important.

Memory fades.

Evidence doesn't.

Then Mara said something that made me stop.

"There is one more thing."

I looked up.

"What?"

"Before the ultrasound appointment..."

She swallowed.

"Caleb found out I was going to tell you."

My expression changed.

"How?"

"I don't know."

"What happened?"

"He came home early."

"And?"

"He said he knew I was planning to leave."

My stomach tightened.

"How did he know?"

Mara shook her head.

"I don't know."

That was the question.

How?

How did Caleb know where Mara was going?

How did he know she would talk?

How did he know I had started looking into him?

Then I remembered.

The photograph.

My kitchen window.

The messages.

Someone was watching.

I stood.

"Mara."

"What?"

"I need to ask you something."

She looked nervous.

"What?"

"Does Caleb have access to your phone?"

She hesitated.

Then slowly nodded.

"How?"

"He said he installed something to protect me."

My face hardened.

"Did you give him permission?"

"No."

That changed everything.

I took her phone.

"Don't use this anymore."

She looked scared.

"Why?"

"Because if he can see where you are, who you call, and what you send..."

I looked at her.

"He already knows more than we think."

I spent the next hour securing her accounts.

New passwords.

New email.

New device.

New number.

Every step mattered.

But as I worked, I noticed something.

A notification appeared.

A login attempt.

From an unknown device.

Recently.

Very recently.

My heart sank.

"Mara."

She looked over.

"What?"

"Someone is still trying to access your account."

She went pale.

"Caleb?"

"I don't know."

I stared at the screen.

But deep down...

I already had a suspicion.

That night, after Mara finally fell asleep, I stayed awake.

I reviewed every piece of evidence.

The bruises.

The messages.

The financial records.

The surveillance photo.

The hidden accounts.

The threats.

Then I noticed something I had missed before.

A pattern.

Every major event involving Caleb happened after one specific thing.

Someone contacted him.

Someone gave him information.

Someone was helping him.

I opened the old records again.

Whitmore Holdings.

The financial investigation.

The missing evidence.

The person who interfered years ago.

And then I found a name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made me sit completely still.

Because the person helping Caleb...

Was someone who had spent years pretending to protect my family.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Then a voice finally whispered:

"Lena..."

I froze.

Because I recognized it.

"Stop before you destroy everyone."

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Mara was asleep in the next room.

Caleb was dangerous.

But now I knew something else.

He wasn't working alone.

May you like

And the person standing behind him...

Was someone I had trusted.
