Chapter 2 — The Divorce Papers

Daniel Crawford did not sleep that night.
Not even for a second.
The luxurious master bedroom that had once made him feel powerful now felt like a prison cell. Every ticking second of the clock sounded louder than the storm that had raged outside only hours earlier.
Jessica was gone.
The babies were gone.
And so was everything he thought he owned.
At 6:13 a.m., Daniel sat on the edge of his bed, staring blankly at his phone. He had called Jessica fifty-three times.
No answer.
He had sent eighty-one messages.
No reply.
His final text remained unread.
Please talk to me. I’m sorry. I panicked. I was stupid. I love you.
Nothing.
Across the room, Margaret paced like a woman losing her mind.
“This cannot be happening.”
Her voice shook.
“She’s bluffing.”
Daniel didn’t respond.
Margaret snapped.
“Say something!”
Daniel finally looked up, pale and hollow-eyed.
“She isn’t bluffing.”
Margaret froze.
“What?”
Daniel swallowed hard.
“I tried logging into the company server.”
He lifted his phone with trembling hands.
“Access denied.”
He laughed bitterly.
Then added—
“My bank account is frozen too.”
Margaret’s knees weakened.
“No…”
Daniel stood and ran both hands through his hair.
“This doesn’t make sense.”
Margaret stared.
“How did we not know?”
Daniel slammed his fist into the wall.
“Because she hid everything!”
But even as he said it, something inside him whispered the truth.
Jessica hadn’t hidden herself.
He had simply never cared enough to ask.
He remembered every moment now.
The way Jessica never cared about luxury brands.
How she never bragged.
How she avoided business galas.
How she hated discussing wealth.
He used to think that made her simple.
Ordinary.
Safe.
But now?
Now every memory felt different.
Margaret whispered, horrified.
“Oh God…”
Daniel turned.
“What?”
Margaret’s voice dropped.
“The hospital donation wing…”
Daniel frowned.
“What about it?”
Margaret looked sick.
“The Monroe Pediatric Center.”
Silence.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
No.
No way.
He remembered the plaque.
The massive silver letters.
MONROE PEDIATRIC CENTER — Founded by the Monroe Family
His chest tightened.
Jessica had donated twenty million dollars to that hospital.
And he never knew.
His breathing became uneven.
“Why would she marry me if she had all that?”
Margaret answered bitterly.
“Because unlike us…”
She looked down.
“She loved for real.”
That hit harder than any slap.
Daniel collapsed into a chair.
Every cruel word from last night replayed in his head.
Leave tonight.
This house is mine.
You own nothing.
He buried his face in his hands.
What had he done?
The woman who had stood beside him for seven years…
The woman who held his hand through failed deals…
The woman who stayed up all night helping him rehearse presentations…
The woman who nearly died delivering his triplets…
He had thrown her away.
For Vanessa.
A woman who disappeared the second money disappeared.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
Daniel answered immediately.
“Jessica?”
“No.”
A cold male voice answered.
“This is attorney Samuel Bennett.”
Daniel straightened.
Jessica’s lawyer.
His pulse spiked.
“Put Jessica on.”
Mr. Bennett ignored the demand.
“I’m calling regarding legal documents.”
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“What documents?”
Silence.
Then—
“Divorce papers.”
Everything stopped.
Daniel couldn’t breathe.
“No.”
Mr. Bennett continued calmly.
“Mrs. Crawford has filed for immediate divorce, full custody of the children, and emergency protective orders.”
Daniel exploded.
“What?!”
Margaret rushed closer.
“What happened?”
Daniel held up his hand.
“No! No, this is insane!”
Mr. Bennett’s tone remained ice cold.
“The court reviewed security footage from last night.”
Daniel froze.
Security footage?
His blood ran cold.
Of course.
The mansion had surveillance.
Every camera.
Every angle.
His voice cracked.
“What footage?”
Mr. Bennett answered without emotion.
“Footage of you forcing your wife and three medically vulnerable newborns into severe weather conditions.”
Margaret’s face turned white.
Daniel whispered—
“No…”
Mr. Bennett continued.
“Combined with witness statements from household staff, this constitutes reckless endangerment.”
Daniel’s legs nearly gave out.
“No, no, no—”
“Additionally,” Bennett said, “Mrs. Crawford has requested criminal review.”
Criminal.
Review.
Daniel’s mouth went dry.
He whispered.
“Jessica wants me arrested?”
“No.”
Bennett paused.
“Mrs. Crawford wanted nothing.”
Daniel’s heart pounded.
“Then why—”
“Until last night.”
The silence that followed was devastating.
Daniel whispered.
“I need to talk to her.”
“No.”
“Please.”
“No.”
“Please!”
Bennett’s voice sharpened.
“You had seven years to value her.”
Silence.
“You had one storm to destroy everything.”
Click.
Call ended.
Daniel stared at the dead screen.
Then—
He broke.
Completely.
He dropped to his knees and sobbed.
Not elegant tears.
Not quiet regret.
Ugly, violent grief.
Margaret looked shaken.
“What do we do?”
Daniel looked up.
There was only one answer.
“I go to her.”
Margaret grabbed his arm.
“She won’t see you.”
Daniel pulled away.
“She has to.”
He ran downstairs.
Straight to the garage.
Only to stop dead.
Empty.
All luxury cars gone.
Repossession complete.
He cursed.
Minutes later he jumped into a rideshare.
The twenty-minute drive to Monroe Tower felt like torture.
When he arrived, the sight alone crushed him.
The towering glass skyscraper of Monroe Global Holdings stood like a monument to power.
Jessica’s power.
He rushed inside.
Reception froze.
They recognized him.
But something had changed.
No smiles.
No respect.
Only cold professionalism.
“I’m here to see Jessica.”
The receptionist checked the system.
“Appointment?”
“No.”
“Then I’m sorry, sir.”
“I’m her husband.”
The receptionist lifted her eyes.
“Ex-husband, according to legal filing.”
That cut deep.
Daniel slammed his hands on the desk.
“I NEED TO SEE HER!”
Security appeared instantly.
Two guards.
Broad shoulders.
Professional.
Threatening.
Daniel froze.
The receptionist pressed a button.
A screen behind the desk lit up.
Video feed.
Executive office.
Jessica.
Daniel stopped breathing.
She sat at the head of a massive conference table.
Dry hair.
Sharp black suit.
Minimal jewelry.
Cold expression.
Nothing remained of the broken woman from last night.
This woman looked like an empire.
Executives twice her age listened while taking notes.
No one interrupted.
No one questioned.
She spoke.
Everyone obeyed.
Daniel whispered.
“Oh my God…”
That was his wife.
No—
That was the woman he never knew.
The receptionist spoke softly.
“She sees you.”
Daniel stepped closer to the screen.
Jessica finally looked directly into the camera.
Into him.
Emotionless.
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Jess…”
For one second, pain flickered in her eyes.
Then vanished.
He pressed his palm against the desk.
“Please… I’m sorry.”
No response.
Tears streamed down his face.
“I was stupid.”
Silence.
“I was cruel.”
Silence.
“I don’t care about the money.”
Jessica finally spoke.
One sentence.
Calm.
Deadly.
“Liar.”
Daniel froze.
She continued.
“If money didn’t matter…”
Her eyes sharpened.
“…you would have loved me before knowing I had it.”
He shook violently.
“No—”
Jessica leaned slightly forward.
“You didn’t betray me because of Vanessa.”
Daniel stopped.
Her voice became surgical.
“You betrayed me because when power entered the room…”
Pause.
“…you worshipped it.”
She stood.
Every executive stood with her.
Daniel stared.
Jessica delivered the final blow.
“You don’t miss me.”
Her gaze pierced straight through him.
“You miss losing.”
Then—
The screen went black.
Daniel stood frozen.
Destroyed.
Security approached.
“Sir, you need to leave.”
But before they could escort him out, his phone rang again.
Unknown number.
He answered weakly.
“Hello?”
A female voice trembled.
“Mr. Crawford?”
“Yes?”
“This is St. Mary’s Hospital.”
Daniel’s blood froze.
Hospital?
Why?
The nurse continued.
“You need to come immediately.”
His voice shook.
“What happened?”
May you like
Then came the sentence that stopped his heart.
“It’s about one of your babies.”
