Chapter 3 — The Secret From the Delivery Room

Daniel Crawford had never driven so fast in his life.
His hands shook violently on the steering wheel as he sped through red lights, ignoring horns and angry shouts from other drivers. His heart pounded so hard it felt like his ribs might crack under the pressure.
One of the babies.
Something happened to one of the babies.
That was all his mind could process.
By the time he reached St. Mary’s Hospital, his shirt was drenched in sweat despite the cold air.
He ran through the emergency entrance.
“Daniel Crawford!” he shouted at the front desk. “I got a call about my child!”
The nurse behind the counter looked up immediately.
“This way.”
No paperwork.
No delay.
Just urgency.
Daniel followed her through long sterile hallways, every second stretching into torture.
Finally, she stopped outside a private consultation room.
A doctor stood waiting.
Mid-fifties.
Serious expression.
Tired eyes.
His badge read: Dr. Ethan Reynolds.
Daniel rushed forward.
“My baby—what happened? Is my child okay?”
Dr. Reynolds studied him.
Then asked a question Daniel didn’t expect.
“Are you Daniel Crawford?”
“Yes!”
“Jessica Monroe’s husband?”
Daniel hesitated.
“…Soon-to-be ex-husband.”
The doctor’s jaw tightened.
“I see.”
Something in that response terrified Daniel.
“What happened?”
The doctor gestured inside.
“Sit down.”
“No, just tell me!”
Dr. Reynolds’ voice sharpened.
“Sit.”
Daniel obeyed.
His breathing was uneven.
Dr. Reynolds sat across from him.
Then he opened a file.
“Before I say anything, you need to understand something.”
Daniel swallowed hard.
“What?”
The doctor looked him dead in the eye.
“Your wife nearly died giving birth.”
Daniel blinked.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
“What?”
Dr. Reynolds repeated slowly.
“Jessica nearly died.”
Daniel stared.
“No… there must be some mistake.”
The doctor’s expression turned cold.
“No mistake.”
He opened the medical report.
“She lost massive blood volume during delivery.”
Daniel’s ears rang.
“She suffered internal complications.”
His vision blurred.
“She required emergency surgery.”
The doctor’s voice became sharp with anger.
“And after all of that…”
He slammed the file shut.
“…you threw her into a storm.”
Daniel felt physically sick.
“No…”
Dr. Reynolds stood.
“You didn’t know?”
Daniel’s lips trembled.
“She told me delivery was difficult, but…”
“But?”
Daniel’s voice broke.
“She said everything was okay.”
Dr. Reynolds gave a bitter laugh.
“Of course she did.”
Daniel looked up.
“What does that mean?”
The doctor stared at him for a long moment.
Then—
“She protected you.”
Silence.
Daniel froze.
Dr. Reynolds continued.
“She instructed the entire medical staff not to tell you the full truth.”
Daniel whispered.
“Why?”
The doctor answered immediately.
“Because she said you were under pressure.”
Every word hit like a hammer.
“She said your company deal was stressing you.”
“She said you needed support.”
“She said she didn’t want you distracted.”
Daniel couldn’t move.
No.
No.
Jessica had hidden her suffering…
To protect him?
Dr. Reynolds continued.
“She woke up from surgery asking for you.”
Daniel’s chest tightened so hard he gasped.
“She was crying.”
Pause.
“She begged us to let you see her.”
Daniel’s face crumpled.
No…
“She kept saying—”
The doctor stopped.
Daniel whispered.
“What did she say?”
Dr. Reynolds’ eyes hardened.
“She said…”
He quoted slowly.
‘Please tell Daniel the babies are okay first. He worries too much.’
Daniel broke.
Tears flooded instantly.
His shoulders shook.
No.
No.
No.
The doctor didn’t stop.
“She defended you to every nurse.”
“She called you a good man.”
“She said you loved her.”
Each sentence became unbearable.
“She said you would take care of her.”
Daniel sobbed openly.
The doctor leaned forward.
“So tell me, Mr. Crawford.”
His voice turned sharp as glass.
“Why was that woman standing in a storm with newborn triplets?”
Daniel couldn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
Only shame.
Only guilt.
Only horror.
The doctor exhaled.
“I called you here for two reasons.”
Daniel wiped his face.
“What… reasons?”
Dr. Reynolds pulled out another folder.
Reason one.
“One of the babies had breathing distress last night due to cold exposure.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“Which baby?”
“Your son, Noah.”
Daniel whispered.
Noah Crawford.
His son.
The doctor continued.
“He’s stable now.”
Daniel nearly collapsed from relief.
“But…”
The doctor’s expression darkened.
“There’s a second reason.”
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“What?”
Dr. Reynolds pushed the folder forward.
Medical records.
Scans.
Blood reports.
Consent forms.
Daniel frowned.
“What is this?”
The doctor spoke slowly.
“These are Jessica’s surgical records.”
Daniel looked confused.
“Why show me this?”
The doctor stared.
“Because she told us that if anything happened to her…”
Pause.
“…you deserved to know.”
Cold dread spread through Daniel.
“What happened to her?”
Dr. Reynolds inhaled deeply.
Then said the words that shattered Daniel’s soul.
“She can never have children again.”
Silence.
Pure.
Absolute.
Silence.
Daniel didn’t move.
Didn’t blink.
Didn’t breathe.
No.
No.
No.
He looked up like a broken child.
“What?”
Dr. Reynolds repeated.
“The emergency surgery saved her life.”
Pause.
“But not her reproductive system.”
Daniel’s hands began trembling uncontrollably.
“No…”
The doctor continued.
“The triplets were her first pregnancy.”
Pause.
“And her last.”
Daniel’s body folded forward.
He couldn’t process it.
Jessica…
His Jessica…
Risked everything.
Lost everything.
For their babies.
For their family.
And he—
He threw her out.
His stomach turned violently.
He stumbled toward the trash bin and vomited.
The doctor said nothing.
Minutes passed.
Daniel sat on the floor.
Destroyed.
Then he whispered something barely audible.
“She wanted four.”
Dr. Reynolds frowned.
“What?”
Daniel stared blankly.
“She always wanted four kids.”
A hollow laugh escaped him.
“She said three would be chaos…”
Tears streamed again.
“…so we needed four to make it symmetrical.”
He started laughing and crying at once.
Unstable.
Shattered.
“She had names picked out.”
His voice cracked.
“Lily.”
Pause.
“Emma.”
Pause.
“Oliver.”
Pause.
“And Noah.”
Dr. Reynolds’ expression softened.
Daniel buried his face in his hands.
“She’ll never have that now.”
The doctor said quietly—
“No.”
Silence.
Then Daniel looked up.
Red eyes.
Broken soul.
“Can I see her?”
The doctor hesitated.
“She doesn’t want visitors.”
“Please.”
“No.”
“Please!”
Dr. Reynolds stared.
Then—
“She left.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
“She checked out this morning.”
“Where?”
No answer.
Daniel stood.
“WHERE?”
Dr. Reynolds remained calm.
“She requested privacy.”
Daniel’s voice rose.
“I’m her husband!”
The doctor’s stare turned cold again.
“Act like one.”
That landed like a gunshot.
Daniel went silent.
Then—
Dr. Reynolds reached into his coat pocket.
“There’s one more thing.”
He handed Daniel a small sealed envelope.
Written on it in delicate handwriting:
For Daniel — only if he ever tells the truth.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Jessica’s handwriting.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside—
A letter.
And a photo.
The photo fell first.
Daniel picked it up.
Then his blood turned to ice.
It was a picture.
Of Vanessa.
Kissing a man.
Not Daniel.
Another man.
Timestamped.
Three weeks ago.
Daniel’s pupils widened.
No.
Impossible.
He unfolded the letter.
Jessica’s words stared back at him.
He read the first line—
May you like
—and the world stopped.
Daniel, if you are reading this, it means you finally lost everything… and now you’re ready to hear the truth about Vanessa.
