CHAPTER 1 — The Photo That Broke the Lie

The ballroom felt frozen in time.

No one moved.

No one dared to breathe.

Cole Merritt stood motionless, the velvet ring box still open in his trembling hand. The diamond inside sparkled under the chandelier, mocking him.

Across from him, Danielle Vale had gone pale.

Her hand remained over her swollen stomach, but the confidence she wore only seconds ago had vanished.

The little girl tightened her grip on her stuffed rabbit.

“That’s Mr. Cole’s baby picture,” she repeated.

The maid rushed forward.

“I’m so sorry, sir—she wasn’t supposed to come in here—”

Cole raised his hand.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

He slowly knelt in front of the child.

“Sweetheart… where did you get that photo?”

The little girl pointed toward the entrance.

“From the man in the blue car.”

A murmur spread across the crowd.

Blue car.

Cole’s eyes lifted.

Danielle flinched.

He noticed.

And that was enough.

His jaw tightened.

“You came here…” he whispered, staring at Danielle.

Danielle shook her head quickly.

“No, Cole, please, let me explain—”

“Explain what?”

His voice rose.

“That you’re pregnant?”

He stepped closer.

“That you waited until every investor, every board member, every reporter was watching to announce it?”

Danielle’s lips trembled.

“It’s your baby—”

“Then why,” Cole snapped, holding up the photograph, “is there another man kissing you beside a blue car?”

Gasps erupted.

Someone dropped a champagne glass.

It shattered.

Danielle’s breathing became erratic.

“That picture means nothing.”

Cole laughed.

A cold laugh.

The kind that came from betrayal.

“Nothing?”

He flipped the photo toward the crowd.

The image was clear.

Danielle kissing a man.

Her hand resting on her stomach.

The date stamp in the corner—

Three weeks ago.

After she and Cole were already engaged.

Cole stared at her as if seeing a stranger.

“I gave you everything.”

His voice broke.

“I trusted you.”

Danielle’s eyes filled with tears.

“No… no, listen to me—”

Before she could continue, a deep male voice echoed from the entrance.

“She’s lying.”

Everyone turned.

A man stood near the doorway.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Rain dripping from his coat.

The same blue sports car visible outside through the glass doors.

Danielle went white.

“No…”

The man stepped inside.

“I’m Adrian Cross.”

He looked directly at Cole.

“And that baby…”

He paused.

“…is mine.”

Chaos exploded.

The ballroom erupted into shouts.

“What?!”
“Oh my God!”
“She trapped him!”

Danielle screamed.

“No! Adrian, shut up!”

Adrian ignored her.

He walked forward.

“She came to me crying three months ago. Said she needed money. Said if she could make Cole believe the child was his, she’d never have to worry again.”

Cole stopped breathing.

The words hit like bullets.

Danielle grabbed Adrian’s sleeve.

“You promised you wouldn’t come!”

Adrian ripped his arm away.

“You promised we’d split the money.”

Cole’s face darkened.

Money.

It had always been money.

Not love.

Not family.

Money.

His hands shook.

Every memory with Danielle replayed in his mind.

Her smiles.

Her kisses.

Her whispered “I love you.”

All calculated.

All fake.

Danielle fell to her knees.

“Cole, please! I love you!”

Cole stared down at her.

“No.”

His voice was ice.

“You love my last name.”

Tears streamed down Danielle’s face.

“You don’t understand—”

“No,” he interrupted.

“I understand perfectly.”

He closed the ring box.

Click.

The sound felt like a gunshot.

“It’s over.”

Danielle screamed.

“No!”

She lunged for him, but security rushed forward.

“Sir?”

Cole didn’t even look at her.

“Remove both of them.”

Danielle sobbed.

“You can’t do this to me!”

Cole finally turned.

His expression was devastatingly cold.

“I can.”

He stepped closer.

“And I just did.”

Security escorted Danielle and Adrian away as guests whispered viciously.

The scandal had already spread.

Phones were out.

Videos recorded.

Tomorrow, every headline would scream:

Billionaire Heir Exposes Fake Pregnancy at Engagement Gala

But Cole didn’t care.

Not anymore.

As the doors shut behind Danielle, silence returned.

Then—

The little girl tugged his sleeve.

“Mr. Cole?”

He looked down.

Her innocent blue eyes stared into his.

“Are you sad?”

The question broke something inside him.

He swallowed hard.

“…Yes.”

She lifted her stuffed rabbit.

“When I’m sad, Bunny helps.”

Several guests wiped tears.

The child offered him the rabbit.

Cole stared.

Then, for the first time that night—

He smiled.

A real smile.

Small.

Broken.

But real.

“What’s your name?”

“Lily.”

Lily.

Cole nodded.

“Thank you, Lily.”

The maid bowed nervously.

“I apologize, sir. She wandered off.”

Cole studied the maid for the first time.

Young.

Graceful.

Quiet.

But beautiful in a way untouched by wealth.

“What’s your name?”

She hesitated.

“Eva Hart.”

Their eyes met.

And for one second—

Something shifted.

Something neither understood.

But before another word could be spoken—

Cole’s phone rang.

His assistant.

Panicked.

“Mr. Merritt!”

“What?”

“The board… they’ve called an emergency meeting.”

Cole frowned.

“Why?”

Silence.

Then—

“Someone just leaked confidential company files.”

Cole’s blood ran cold.

“What files?”

His assistant’s voice trembled.

“Internal ownership documents.”

Cole stiffened.

Impossible.

Those documents were sealed.

Only family had access.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Sir…”

Heavy breathing.

“The documents show…”

A pause.

“…you may not be the legal heir to the Merritt empire.”

Cole froze.

The ballroom vanished around him.

His pulse thundered.

“What did you say?”

“I’m sorry, sir.”

His assistant whispered:

May you like

“There’s another heir.”
