CHAPTER 2 — The Hidden Heir

The words echoed in Cole Merritt’s mind long after the call ended.
There’s another heir.
Impossible.
No.
It had to be fake.
A setup.
First Danielle’s pregnancy scandal. Now this?
Someone was attacking him.
Systematically.
Publicly.
Brutally.
The ballroom around him blurred into noise—whispers, footsteps, camera flashes—but Cole heard none of it. His entire body felt numb.
His assistant’s voice still rang in his ear.
“The board has all the documents, sir. They’re demanding you come immediately.”
Cole clenched his jaw.
“Seal every internal server.”
“Yes, sir.”
“Freeze executive file access.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And find out who leaked it.”
A pause.
“We’re trying.”
Cole ended the call.
For a long moment, he stood motionless under the chandelier.
Then he felt a small tug on his sleeve.
He looked down.
Little Lily stared up at him, clutching her rabbit.
“Are you crying?”
Cole blinked.
His hand rose to his face.
Wet.
He hadn’t even realized.
Before he could answer, the maid gently pulled Lily back.
“I’m sorry, sir.”
Eva Hart lowered her eyes.
“She asks whatever comes to mind.”
Cole stared at her.
There was something strange.
Familiar.
Not just about Eva.
About Lily too.
The girl’s eyes.
Blue.
Sharp.
Almost identical to—
No.
Impossible.
His thoughts were interrupted by security.
“Sir, the press is outside.”
“Let them wait.”
“But the board—”
“I said wait.”
His voice carried the authority of a man raised to command empires.
Security fell silent.
Cole turned back toward Eva.
“You said your name is Eva?”
“Yes, sir.”
“How long have you worked here?”
She hesitated.
“Three months.”
Only three months?
That unsettled him.
Why did she feel so strangely familiar?
Lily suddenly lifted her rabbit.
“Mommy says staring is rude.”
The word hit him.
Mommy.
Cole’s gaze sharpened.
Mommy?
He looked between them.
“Lily is your daughter?”
Eva stiffened.
“Yes.”
“How old is she?”
“Four.”
Four.
Cole’s heart skipped.
Four years ago.
The same year—
No.
No.
That couldn’t be.
Not possible.
His mind flashed backward.
Four years earlier.
A charity gala in Merritt Grand Hotel.
A girl working part-time.
A waitress with soft brown hair and fearless eyes.
She spilled wine on his jacket.
Panicked.
Apologized.
Then laughed when he joked about it.
They spent hours talking.
One night.
One unforgettable night.
Then she vanished.
He searched.
But she was gone.
No number.
No address.
Nothing.
Just a memory.
Cole stared at Eva again.
His breathing slowed.
Brown hair.
Gentle face.
Same eyes.
Recognition exploded.
His voice dropped.
“…Eva?”
Her face drained of color.
She froze.
Lily looked confused.
“Mommy?”
Cole stepped closer.
“No.”
His voice shook.
“It’s you.”
Eva backed away.
“You’re mistaken.”
“I never forget a face.”
Her hands trembled.
“Sir, please—”
“Four years ago.”
He took another step.
“Charity gala.”
Eva’s lips parted.
No words came.
“You spilled red wine on me.”
Silence.
Cole’s pulse thundered.
“You laughed.”
Her eyes glistened.
“You said rich men looked less terrifying with stains on their suits.”
Tears formed instantly.
Lily looked between them.
“Mommy…?”
Eva whispered.
“Stop.”
Cole’s chest tightened.
“It is you.”
Her shoulders broke.
The composure she’d maintained all night shattered.
“No…”
Cole stared at her in disbelief.
“You disappeared.”
Eva shook her head.
“No, Cole—”
“You left.”
Tears rolled down her face.
“I had to.”
“Why?”
Her breathing turned uneven.
“Because your mother found me.”
The room went silent.
Cole stopped moving.
“What?”
Eva wiped tears with trembling fingers.
“She came to my apartment the next morning.”
His stomach dropped.
No.
No.
His mother?
Margaret Merritt?
Impossible.
“She told me girls like me don’t marry men like you.”
Cole’s hands curled into fists.
Eva continued through tears.
“She offered money.”
Cole whispered.
“And?”
“I refused.”
That sounded right.
Too right.
Eva had never felt like someone who could be bought.
Cole swallowed hard.
“What happened next?”
Eva’s voice broke.
“She threatened my family.”
Cole went still.
“She said if I stayed… she’d destroy everyone I loved.”
Lily clutched Eva’s dress.
“Mommy…”
Eva lifted Lily into her arms.
Cole’s breathing became shallow.
No.
No.
His mother wouldn’t—
But deep down…
He knew.
Margaret Merritt protected the family name like war.
She absolutely would.
Cole looked at Lily.
Then back at Eva.
A horrifying thought entered his mind.
He could barely speak.
“…Eva.”
She closed her eyes.
As if she already knew what came next.
Cole’s voice cracked.
“How old is Lily?”
Eva didn’t answer.
He stepped closer.
“How old?”
“Four.”
His knees weakened.
“When was she born?”
Silence.
Then—
“Three hundred and eight days after I left you.”
The world stopped.
Cole couldn’t breathe.
His voice became a whisper.
“No…”
Eva cried harder.
“I wanted to tell you.”
Cole stared at Lily.
Blue eyes.
His eyes.
The shape of her nose.
His nose.
The way she tilted her head.
Exactly like him.
His heart pounded so violently it hurt.
“No…”
Lily blinked innocently.
“Mr. Cole?”
Cole’s entire body shook.
He dropped to his knees.
At eye level with her.
His voice shattered.
“Lily…”
He looked at Eva.
Then at the child.
Then back.
And finally asked the question his soul feared.
“Is she…”
His throat tightened.
“…my daughter?”
Eva broke.
Years of silence.
Pain.
Fear.
Loneliness.
Everything collapsed.
She sobbed.
“Yes.”
The word detonated inside him.
Cole stopped breathing.
The entire ballroom disappeared.
Only one truth remained.
He had a daughter.
A daughter stolen from him for four years.
His daughter.
Lily smiled.
“Why are you sad again?”
That did it.
Cole burst into tears.
Real tears.
Uncontrolled.
He pulled Lily into his arms.
And cried.
Guests stood frozen.
Security stared.
No one dared interrupt.
The feared billionaire heir—
Was crying like a broken man.
Lily hugged him.
Tiny arms.
Warm.
Trusting.
Innocent.
She whispered:
“It’s okay.”
Cole’s heart shattered completely.
He had missed first words.
First steps.
First birthday.
Four years.
Gone.
Because of lies.
Because of control.
Because of his mother.
His mother.
Rage surged.
He stood, still holding Lily.
His face changed.
Pain turned into steel.
He looked at Eva.
“Where is she?”
Eva went pale.
“Cole—”
“Where is my mother?”
Before Eva could answer—
A cold voice echoed from the staircase above.
“Right here.”
Every head turned.
Standing at the grand staircase in black silk—
Elegant.
Powerful.
Terrifying.
Margaret Merritt.
She descended slowly.
Unbothered.
Calm.
As if nothing shocked her.
Her gaze moved from Cole—
To Lily.
Then to Eva.
And she said the words that froze everyone.
“I see the secret is finally out.”
Cole’s blood ran cold.
Margaret stopped three steps above them.
Then delivered the cruelest revelation yet.
“There’s something else you should know, Cole.”
Silence.
She looked at Lily.
Then at him.
And smiled faintly.
“The leaked inheritance documents…”
A pause.
“…are real.”
Cole’s heart slammed.
Margaret’s next sentence destroyed everything.
“You were never meant to inherit this empire.”
Cole whispered—
“What?”
She met his gaze.
Ice cold.
“Because biologically…”
She paused.
Then said:
May you like
“You are not a Merritt.”
To be continued…
