Chapter 1 — The Woman He Chose

Chapter 1 — The Woman He Chose
The entire reception fell silent.
No music.
No chatter.
Even the soft splash of water from the pool fountain seemed to disappear.
Every guest stared at Noah, the little boy clinging tightly to the maid’s uniform, sobbing into her shoulder as if letting go would destroy him.
The glamorous woman in burgundy froze in the middle of the candlelit aisle.
Her hand, still stretched out from moments earlier, slowly fell to her side.
“What…?” she whispered.
Her perfect smile had vanished.
The maid—Elena—was still kneeling on the marble floor, trembling. Her eyes were red as she held Noah.
“Noah, sweetheart… calm down. I’m here. I’m here.”
Noah gripped her tighter.
“She said you left me…”
Elena’s breathing stopped.
“What?”
“She said you didn’t want me anymore.”
Gasps spread through the guests.
Elena slowly lifted her head.
Her eyes locked onto the woman in burgundy.
The woman’s expression hardened.
The father, Adrian, stepped forward.
Tears still glistened in his eyes, but his face had changed.
No longer heartbroken.
Now furious.
“Say that again, Noah.”
The boy sniffled.
“She told me Mommy abandoned me because she loved money more than me.”
Elena shook violently.
“No… no, baby. I never said that. Never.”
Adrian turned toward the woman.
“Victoria.”
His voice was ice.
“Tell me he’s lying.”
Victoria straightened her posture.
Her voice became sharp.
“He’s a child, Adrian. Children misunderstand things.”
Adrian laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
“Misunderstand?”
He took a step closer.
“You told my son his mother abandoned him?”
Victoria crossed her arms.
“I told him the truth.”
Elena rose to her feet, still holding Noah.
“The truth?” she cried. “You stole my child!”
Whispers exploded among the guests.
“Stole?”
“What is happening?”
“Wait… the maid is his mother?”
Victoria rolled her eyes.
“Oh please.”
She looked around at the crowd.
“Are we really doing this here?”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
He reached into his tuxedo pocket.
Then he pulled out a thick brown envelope.
Victoria’s face changed.
Immediately.
Fear.
Raw fear.
Adrian noticed.
So did everyone else.
He opened the envelope.
“I hired investigators six months ago.”
Victoria’s breathing quickened.
“No…”
“I wanted to know why Noah had nightmares every night after spending time with you.”
Victoria stepped backward.
“Adrian, stop.”
He ignored her.
He pulled out photos.
Security footage.
Documents.
Bank transfers.
And one hospital record.
Adrian raised the hospital paper for everyone to see.
“This is Elena’s medical report from six years ago.”
Elena stared.
Confused.
Adrian continued.
“The night she gave birth… someone paid a private doctor to declare her mentally unstable.”
Elena’s knees nearly gave out.
“No…”
Adrian looked at Victoria.
“The payment came from your company account.”
The crowd erupted.
Victoria screamed.
“That proves nothing!”
Adrian threw another document.
“This does.”
It landed near her feet.
DNA results.
Victoria stared at the paper.
Frozen.
Noah looked up.
“Daddy?”
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“I ran the test after Noah started asking questions.”
He looked at Elena.
Then spoke words that shattered everything.
“Elena… you are Noah’s biological mother.”
Elena stopped breathing.
The world blurred.
Noah…
Her son?
Her baby?
Alive.
Here.
In her arms.
She dropped to her knees again, crying uncontrollably.
“Noah…”
She touched his face with shaking hands.
“My baby…”
Noah stared.
Then something inside him clicked.
The warmth.
The smell.
The voice.
Why she always felt safe.
Why her hugs felt familiar.
Why every nightmare ended when she held him.
His lips trembled.
“Mommy?”
Elena broke.
She cried harder than she ever had in her life.
“Yes.”
She held him.
“Yes, baby.”
Noah burst into tears and hugged her.
“Mommy!”
The guests wiped their eyes.
Even hardened businessmen were emotional.
Victoria screamed.
“No!”
She pointed at Elena.
“She’s nothing! She’s a maid!”
Adrian slowly turned.
The look in his eyes made Victoria step back.
“She is more of a mother in one day than you have been in six years.”
Victoria’s voice became desperate.
“You can’t do this to me!”
Adrian moved closer.
“I already did.”
He signaled security.
Two guards entered.
Victoria panicked.
“No—Adrian! Listen to me!”
“You drugged a new mother.”
“You stole her child.”
“You lied to my son.”
“You manipulated me for years.”
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“And somehow… you still think you’re the victim.”
Victoria lunged toward Noah.
“If I can’t have him—”
Security grabbed her instantly.
She screamed.
Kicked.
Cried.
“You’ll regret this!”
Noah buried his face in Elena’s chest.
Terrified.
Elena shielded him.
Adrian’s voice thundered.
“Take her away.”
Security dragged Victoria toward the exit.
Her screams echoed through the estate.
“This isn’t over!”
Silence followed.
Heavy silence.
Then Adrian turned toward Elena.
For the first time in years…
He looked ashamed.
Truly ashamed.
He knelt.
In front of her.
“Elena…”
She stared through tears.
“I failed you.”
He lowered his head.
“I believed lies.”
“I let them steal your son.”
“I made you work in this house… as a maid… while your child grew up beside you.”
His voice broke.
“I am so sorry.”
Elena cried quietly.
Years of pain.
Years of loneliness.
Years of confusion.
And now…
Truth.
Noah looked between them.
“Daddy… Mommy…”
He grabbed both their hands.
“Can we go home now?”
That simple question destroyed the remaining walls in Adrian’s heart.
He cried openly.
“Yes, son.”
He kissed Noah’s forehead.
“Yes.”
Then Noah asked one final question.
The question no one expected.
“If she’s my real mommy…”
He looked at Adrian.
“Why does she look scared of us?”
Adrian froze.
Elena froze.
Because Noah had noticed something.
Something no one else had.
Elena wasn’t just emotional.
She was terrified.
Terrified of something bigger.
Her eyes suddenly darted toward the mansion.
Toward the second-floor window.
Someone was watching.
A shadow.
A figure.
Standing in darkness.
Elena’s face turned white.
“No…”
Adrian followed her gaze.
But the figure disappeared.
“Elena?”
She whispered.
“He’s here.”
Adrian frowned.
“Who?”
Her lips trembled.
“The man who helped Victoria steal Noah…”
Her voice dropped to a whisper.
“He never disappeared.”
May you like
Then she said the words that chilled everyone.
“He’s inside this house.”
