Chapter 4 — The Final Countdown

Chapter 4 — The Final Countdown

Click.

For one terrifying second…

Nothing happened.

No sound.

No explosion.

No signal.

Just silence.

Elena’s heart stopped.

Her thumb remained pressed against the MASTER OVERRIDE button.

The three red lights around the estate were still blinking.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Richard’s face slowly changed.

Then—

He smiled.

A horrifying smile.

“You really thought it would be that easy?”

Elena’s blood ran cold.

“No…”

Richard laughed.

“That remote only disables the secondary triggers.”

Adrian’s eyes widened.

“What?”

Richard lifted his wrist.

The watch.

Still blinking.

One final red light.

Only one.

His voice became calm again.

Dangerously calm.

“The primary detonator stays with me.”

Guests screamed.

“No!”

“This can’t be happening!”

Adrian stepped forward.

“How much time?”

Richard checked his watch.

Then smiled.

“Thirty seconds.”

Panic exploded.

People ran in every direction.

Security shouted orders.

Smoke still drifted through the shattered reception.

Candles burned across broken tables.

Glass crunched under desperate footsteps.

Noah buried his face in Elena’s chest.

“Mommy…”

Elena held him tightly.

Her mind raced.

Thirty seconds.

One bomb left.

Where?

Where was it?

Adrian shouted.

“Find the last device!”

Security spread instantly.

But the estate was huge.

Too huge.

Twenty-seven seconds.

Richard’s breathing slowed.

Almost peaceful.

He looked at Adrian.

“This is how empires fall.”

Adrian’s fists tightened.

“No.”

Richard tilted his head.

“You still don’t understand.”

Twenty-three seconds.

Richard’s eyes gleamed.

“If I can’t control your future…”

He looked at Noah.

“No one will.”

Adrian roared and charged.

Richard moved first.

He pressed another button on the watch.

A metallic click echoed nearby.

Elena froze.

That sound—

It came from above.

She looked up.

The chandelier.

The massive crystal chandelier hanging beneath the reception tent.

Her eyes widened in horror.

Bomb.

Attached to the center frame.

Directly above—

Noah.

“Elena?” Adrian shouted.

She screamed.

“UP THERE!”

Everyone looked.

The device blinked red.

Twenty seconds.

Adrian stopped breathing.

The chandelier.

If it exploded—

Hundreds of glass shards.

No survivors below.

Richard smiled.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?”

Adrian charged again.

This time with pure fury.

Richard swung.

Adrian blocked.

Punch.

Elbow.

Knee.

Both men crashed into a pillar.

Richard was older.

But vicious.

Adrian was stronger.

But exhausted.

They fought like animals.

Eighteen seconds.

Security tried to intervene.

Richard screamed—

“BACK OFF OR I PRESS IT NOW!”

They froze.

He still had control.

Elena stared upward.

No time.

No ladder.

No tools.

No way.

Then—

Noah looked at her.

His eyes suddenly focused.

Clear.

Sharp.

“Mommy.”

Elena looked down.

“What?”

He pointed.

“The rope.”

She blinked.

The chandelier suspension rope.

Running down the side support beam.

Her mind sparked.

If she could cut it—

The chandelier would fall away from the crowd.

But—

It would drop near the pool.

She’d need to redirect it.

Almost impossible.

Fifteen seconds.

Adrian took a punch to the ribs.

Crack.

Pain exploded.

Richard grinned.

“You’re slowing down.”

Adrian spat blood.

“Not enough.”

Richard slammed him into the floor.

Adrian groaned.

Richard climbed on top.

Watch inches from Adrian’s face.

Fourteen seconds.

“Look at you.”

He laughed.

“The mighty Adrian Hale.”

Broken.

Bleeding.

Powerless.

Richard whispered.

“This is where you lose everything.”

Elena scanned desperately.

Knife.

Where?

Then she saw it.

A broken catering tray.

A sharp metal shard.

She grabbed it.

Noah clutched her sleeve.

“Mommy…”

She knelt.

Holding his face.

“Noah.”

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

“I need you to run to Daddy when I say so.”

His eyes widened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“No!”

Her voice broke.

“Listen to me.”

He shook his head violently.

“No!”

She kissed his forehead.

“If anything happens…”

“No!”

“You must remember this.”

She cried openly now.

“I never left you willingly.”

Noah sobbed.

“I know…”

Her body froze.

“What?”

Noah cried.

“I know.”

Elena stared.

Noah wiped tears.

“I knew he lied.”

She shattered.

“My baby…”

Noah hugged her.

“I know you love me.”

Ten seconds.

Richard laughed.

“How touching.”

Adrian saw Elena.

Saw the metal shard.

Saw the rope.

He understood.

His eyes locked with hers.

No words.

None needed.

He would create an opening.

Eight seconds.

Adrian suddenly headbutted Richard.

CRACK.

Richard screamed.

Nose shattered.

Blood exploded.

Adrian shoved him backward.

Richard roared.

“You bastard!”

Seven seconds.

Adrian tackled him toward the pool.

Richard fought wildly.

Elena ran.

Toward the support beam.

Richard saw.

No.

His eyes widened.

“STOP HER!”

Six seconds.

Too late.

Elena jumped.

Grabbed the rope.

Raised the sharp metal.

Cut.

The rope frayed.

Not enough.

Five seconds.

Richard kicked Adrian away.

Adrian crashed hard.

Richard sprinted toward Elena.

Four seconds.

Elena slashed again.

Fibers snapped.

The chandelier groaned.

Three seconds.

Richard lunged.

Got her wrist.

“No!”

He twisted her arm.

The shard fell.

Two seconds.

Elena screamed in pain.

Richard grinned.

“You lose.”

Then—

A tiny blur moved.

Noah.

He ran.

Straight at Richard.

“Noah, NO!”

Too late.

The little boy threw himself at Richard’s leg.

With all his strength.

Richard lost balance.

“What—?!”

One second.

Elena ripped free.

Grabbed the shard.

Final cut.

SNAP.

The rope broke.

The chandelier dropped.

Richard looked up.

Horror.

Pure horror.

“No—”

Crash.

Crystal exploded.

Metal crushed downward.

The entire structure collapsed.

Adrian screamed—

“NOAH!”

Everything went white.

A deafening blast of crystal, sparks, and twisted steel.

Then—

Silence.

Smoke filled the air.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Adrian crawled forward through shattered glass.

Blood on his hands.

Voice broken.

“Noah…”

No answer.

“Elena…”

Nothing.

He pushed aside metal.

Crystal.

Wood.

His hands tore open.

Bleeding.

“Noah!”

His voice cracked into a scream.

“NOAH!”

Then—

A sound.

Tiny.

Weak.

“Daddy…”

Adrian froze.

Noah.

Alive.

He tore away the final beam.

And saw them.

Elena.

Curled around Noah.

Her body shielding him completely.

Every shard.

Every impact.

She took it.

To protect him.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“No…”

Elena was unconscious.

Blood ran from her forehead.

Her arm bent unnaturally.

Noah cried.

“Mommy won’t wake up…”

Adrian’s soul shattered.

He pulled them free.

Held both.

“Elena.”

No response.

“No…”

His tears fell onto her face.

“Please.”

Noah sobbed.

“Daddy…”

Adrian shook.

“Wake up.”

Nothing.

No movement.

No breath?

No—

Wait.

A faint pulse.

Weak.

Very weak.

Alive.

But barely.

Paramedics rushed in.

“She’s critical!”

“Move!”

As they lifted Elena onto a stretcher—

Her hand moved.

Barely.

She grabbed Adrian’s sleeve.

Eyes still closed.

Lips trembling.

A whisper escaped.

So soft.

Almost gone.

“Protect… our son…”

Then her hand fell limp.

Machines screamed.

Paramedics shouted.

“She’s crashing!”

Adrian froze.

Noah screamed.

“Mommy!”

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Sirens exploded into the night.

And as Adrian stood there, shattered and bleeding—

Security approached.

Face pale.

“Sir…”

Adrian turned.

“What?”

The guard swallowed hard.

Then pointed beneath the collapsed chandelier.

Under twisted steel.

A hand.

Richard’s hand.

Still moving.

Adrian’s eyes widened.

No.

Impossible.

Then Richard’s voice came.

Weak.

Broken.

But laughing.

Still laughing.

And he whispered words that froze Adrian’s blood:

“You’re… too late…”

Cough.

Blood.

Then—

“She knows… the truth now…”

Adrian stepped forward.

“What truth?!”

Richard smiled through blood.

His final cruel gift.

“The letter…”

Adrian’s breathing stopped.

“What letter?”

Richard’s smile widened.

May you like

“The one Elena never read…”

Then he lost consciousness.
