CHAPTER 1: The Men in Black

CHAPTER 1: The Men in Black
The wedding guests stood frozen in stunned silence.
Only moments earlier, they had laughed as the ragged old man crawled across the white aisle, his torn shirt stained with blood and dirt. They had watched the groom call him a filthy beggar. Some had looked away in embarrassment. Others had whispered that security should remove him before he ruined the ceremony.
Now, not a single person spoke.
The bride remained on her knees beside the elderly man, clutching his scarred hand as tears streamed down her face.
"I've finally found you..." she whispered, her voice breaking. "After all these years... I've finally found you."
The old man looked at her with gentle eyes.
"I never wanted to interrupt your happiness," he said softly. "I only wanted to see the little girl I once carried become a beautiful bride."
The bride buried her face against his shoulder and sobbed.
"You should have told me..."
"There was never a reason."
The groom, however, had already lost his patience.
"What is going on?" he shouted. "Somebody get this old man out of here!"
His voice echoed across the lavish estate.
The musicians stopped playing.
The photographers lowered their cameras.
Even the wedding planner stood frozen.
The groom walked toward them, his polished shoes crunching over scattered flower petals.
"This wedding is over if he stays here another second."
The bride slowly stood.
Her face was wet with tears, but her eyes burned with anger unlike anything the groom had ever seen.
"You don't get to decide that anymore."
"What?"
"You heard me."
She stepped between the groom and the old man.
"You insulted the man who saved my life."
The groom laughed nervously.
"Are you serious?"
"You've got to be joking."
"This homeless guy?"
Before the bride could answer...
The deep rumble of engines rolled through the front gates.
Every head turned.
One...
Two...
Three...
Six black luxury SUVs entered the estate one after another.
They moved slowly down the long driveway before stopping beside the wedding aisle.
The doors opened simultaneously.
Eight men and two women stepped out.
Every one of them wore perfectly tailored black suits.
None of them looked like ordinary guests.
Each carried an expression of urgency mixed with relief.
Without speaking to anyone else...
They hurried directly toward the old man.
The tallest among them suddenly stopped.
His eyes filled with tears.
He lowered his head.
Then...
To everyone's disbelief...
He bowed deeply.
"Chairman..."
The entire crowd gasped.
The groom frowned.
"What did he just call him?"
Another executive rushed forward carrying a neatly folded coat.
He carefully placed it over the old man's shoulders as though handling priceless treasure.
"We're so sorry we're late, sir."
"We searched everywhere."
The old man sighed.
"You shouldn't have come."
"We had no choice."
"We finally traced your location this morning."
The bride looked from one executive to another.
"You know him?"
The oldest executive smiled respectfully.
"Know him?"
"Miss..."
"There isn't a single employee in our company who doesn't know this man."
Confused whispers spread through the audience.
"What company?"
"Who is he?"
"Is this some kind of mistake?"
The groom folded his arms.
"This is ridiculous."
"If he's so important, why is he dressed like that?"
The executive turned toward him.
His calm expression disappeared instantly.
"Because he chose this life."
The groom scoffed.
"Nobody chooses to live like a beggar."
The executive looked as though he wanted to say something.
Instead...
He reached into his briefcase.
He removed a worn leather folder.
Inside was an old newspaper.
The front page featured a younger version of the elderly man standing beside government officials during the opening of a children's hospital.
Another article showed him receiving an international humanitarian award.
Another displayed photographs of schools, disaster relief centers, and medical clinics.
Every headline carried the same name.
Guests leaned closer.
Some covered their mouths.
Others pulled out their phones.
The groom glanced at the articles but quickly looked away.
"I've never heard of him."
The executive nodded.
"That doesn't surprise me."
"He spent the last twelve years making sure no one would."
The bride stared at the photographs.
Although the man looked younger...
His smile hadn't changed.
It was the same warm smile she remembered through the smoke and flames all those years ago.
The same smile that told a terrified little girl everything would be okay.
Her knees nearly gave out again.
"I searched for you everywhere..."
"I hired investigators."
"I visited every hospital."
"I even created a charity hoping you'd someday hear my story."
The old man smiled gently.
"And look..."
"You became exactly the kind person I hoped you would become."
Before anyone could continue...
Another black sedan entered through the gate.
This one carried no company logo.
Two uniformed police officers stepped out.
Behind them came a sharply dressed government official.
The wedding guests exchanged nervous glances.
The official walked directly toward the elderly man.
Without hesitation...
He extended both hands respectfully.
"It's an honor to see you again, sir."
The groom's confidence began to crumble.
"What is happening?"
"Who are these people?"
No one answered him.
The official turned toward the guests instead.
"I apologize for interrupting this ceremony."
"But there is something everyone here deserves to know."
The old man immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Please."
"Don't."
The official hesitated.
"You've hidden your identity for long enough."
The old man smiled sadly.
"I didn't disappear because I wanted recognition."
"I disappeared because I was tired."
"Tired of cameras."
"Tired of interviews."
"Tired of people loving my money more than my heart."
The bride squeezed his hand.
"I would have loved you even if you had nothing."
"I know."
"And that's why I came today."
A tear rolled down the old man's weathered face.
"I wanted to make sure the little girl I saved had found someone worthy of her."
His eyes slowly shifted toward the groom.
Silence settled over the entire estate.
The groom instinctively looked away.
For the first time that day...
He couldn't meet the old man's gaze.
The executive quietly closed the leather folder.
Then he spoke in a calm voice that carried across the silent wedding venue.
"I'm afraid..."
"Our chairman has already made his decision."
Every guest held their breath.
The bride felt the old man's trembling hand tighten around hers.
"What decision?" she whispered.
The executive looked directly at the groom.
Then he said seven words that sent a chill through everyone present.
"He asked us to investigate your fiancé."
The groom's face instantly turned white.
May you like
Because deep inside...
He already knew exactly what they were going to find.
