CHAPTER 3: The Fire Was Never an Accident

CHAPTER 3: The Fire Was Never an Accident

The words echoed through the silent wedding venue like a clap of thunder.

"The fire was never an accident."

For several long seconds, no one moved.

The bride stared at the elderly man, unable to process what she had just heard.

Her entire life, she had believed the official story. The apartment fire that destroyed her childhood home had been ruled an electrical accident. The investigation had been closed within weeks, and everyone—including her surviving relatives—had accepted the conclusion.

Now, the man who had risked his life to save her was telling her that everything she had believed for more than twenty years was a lie.

Her voice trembled.

"What... what do you mean?"

The old man lowered his head, as though revisiting memories he had spent years trying to forget.

"I never wanted you to carry this burden."

"But you're no longer a frightened little girl."

"You deserve the truth."

A cold breeze swept across the wedding lawn, rustling the white flowers that decorated the ceremony.

No one dared leave.

The guests who had arrived expecting champagne and dancing now found themselves witnessing something far more unbelievable.

The government official stepped back, allowing the old man to speak without interruption.

The elderly man took a slow breath.

"Twenty-two years ago, I wasn't driving past your apartment by coincidence."

The bride frowned.

"You weren't?"

He shook his head.

"No."

"I had gone there to meet someone."

"Someone who claimed to have evidence that a powerful businessman was setting fire to old apartment buildings so the land could be purchased cheaply."

Gasps spread through the crowd.

The bride's heart pounded.

"Someone was burning buildings... on purpose?"

The old man nodded.

"That neighborhood was becoming valuable."

"Developers wanted the land."

"But hundreds of families still lived there."

"The quickest way to force people out..."

"...was to destroy their homes."

The bride covered her mouth.

"My mother..."

"My father..."

"Were they targets?"

The old man's eyes filled with sorrow.

"I'm afraid they were."

Tears rolled down the bride's face.

"My parents didn't die because of an accident..."

He slowly shook his head.

"No."

"They died because someone believed money was worth more than human lives."

The guests stood frozen in horror.

Even the groom, whose own secrets had been exposed only minutes earlier, looked genuinely shaken.

"This is insane," he muttered.

"You're talking about murder."

The government official spoke for the first time.

"Unfortunately..."

"Evidence recovered over the last year suggests the chairman is telling the truth."

The guests erupted into whispers.

"You mean the case was covered up?"

The official nodded.

"Several investigators involved in the original case accepted bribes."

"The report was altered."

"Important evidence disappeared."

"The fire was officially ruled accidental before the forensic examination had even been completed."

The bride felt her knees weaken.

The old man gently caught her before she fell.

"I'm sorry."

"I wanted to tell you years ago."

"But I couldn't."

She looked into his eyes.

"Why?"

"Because after the fire..."

"They came after me."

A stunned silence followed.

"They knew I had seen something."

"I recognized one of the men leaving the building just before the explosion."

"They realized I was alive."

"And from that day forward..."

"I became a target."

The bride stared at him.

"That's why you disappeared."

He nodded.

"I changed my name."

"I sold everything I owned."

"I never stayed in one city for more than a few months."

"I lived quietly."

"I trusted almost no one."

"Not because I was afraid of dying..."

He smiled faintly.

"But because I knew they would come after anyone close to me."

The bride's tears flowed freely.

"So... you stayed away..."

"...to protect me."

The old man gently touched her shoulder.

"If they had discovered I was searching for you..."

"You would have been in danger too."

She suddenly wrapped her arms around him.

"You protected me for twenty-two years..."

"...and I never even knew."

The wedding guests quietly wiped tears from their eyes.

Several bridesmaids openly cried.

Even the photographers had forgotten to take pictures.

At that moment, one of the younger executives hurried toward the chairman, carrying a sealed envelope.

"Sir..."

"It just arrived."

The old man looked at the envelope.

His expression immediately changed.

The executive whispered,

"It came anonymously."

The chairman slowly opened it.

Inside...

Was a faded photograph.

The moment he saw it, his hands began to shake.

The bride noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

Instead of answering...

He handed her the photograph.

Her heart nearly stopped.

It was an old family picture taken just weeks before the fire.

She recognized herself immediately.

A six-year-old girl smiling beside her parents.

But then...

She noticed something she had never paid attention to before.

Standing in the background...

Near the apartment entrance...

Was a man wearing a dark suit.

His face had been circled with red ink.

On the back of the photograph were only six handwritten words.

"He started the fire. He's still alive."

The bride looked up in shock.

"Who is he?"

The old man slowly closed his eyes.

"I don't know his name."

"But I never forgot his face."

The government official stepped closer.

"We've been trying to identify him for over a year."

"So far..."

"No matches."

The bride stared at the photograph again.

Something about the man's face felt strangely familiar.

She couldn't explain why.

She had never seen him before...

Had she?

Suddenly...

A voice came from behind.

"I know who that man is."

Everyone turned.

It was the groom's father.

He had quietly arrived at the wedding nearly an hour late and had witnessed the last part of the shocking revelations.

His face had turned ghostly pale.

His eyes never left the photograph.

The bride looked at him.

"You know him?"

He swallowed hard.

Then whispered words that made every person at the ceremony stop breathing.

"I worked for him..."

"...twenty-two years ago."

And before anyone could ask another question...

He collapsed to the ground.

The photograph slipped from the bride's trembling hands.

For the first time, she realized that the conspiracy surrounding the fire was far larger than anyone had imagined.

May you like

And somehow...

Her fiancé's family was connected to it.
