CHAPTER 2: The Investigation No One Saw Coming

CHAPTER 2: The Investigation No One Saw Coming

The color drained from the groom's face.

For a brief moment, he forced a smile, hoping the uneasy feeling twisting inside his stomach was nothing more than fear. He straightened his tuxedo jacket and let out a nervous laugh.

"Investigate me?" he said loudly enough for the guests to hear. "That's ridiculous. I'm the one being humiliated here."

No one answered.

The executives remained perfectly still.

The police officers exchanged silent glances.

Even the musicians who had been hired to perform at the ceremony seemed reluctant to move, as if they sensed history unfolding before their eyes.

The bride slowly looked from her fiancé to the elderly man.

"What does he mean?" she asked quietly.

The old man lowered his eyes.

"I asked them to learn about the man you were going to marry."

"You... investigated Ethan?" she whispered.

"I didn't do it because I wanted to interfere with your life."

He paused before continuing.

"I did it because I promised myself something twenty-two years ago."

The bride frowned.

"What promise?"

The old man smiled sadly.

"The day I carried you out of that burning apartment, I told myself that if fate ever allowed me to see you again, I would make sure no one ever hurt you."

The bride felt fresh tears welling in her eyes.

"You remembered me all these years?"

"I never forgot."

"I remembered the little girl who wouldn't stop crying because she thought her mother was still inside the fire."

"I remembered how tightly you held my hand in the ambulance."

"I remembered the tiny silver bracelet you refused to let go of."

The bride instinctively looked down at her wrist.

Beneath the lace sleeve of her wedding dress was the same silver bracelet.

She had worn it every single day since she was six years old.

"You remembered..." she whispered.

The old man nodded.

"Some memories never leave us."

Across the aisle, the groom clenched his fists.

"This is unbelievable."

He turned toward the guests.

"Are we really listening to this?"

"A random old man shows up, and suddenly everyone believes whatever he says?"

Still...

No one came to his defense.

Instead, the oldest executive stepped forward carrying a slim black tablet.

"Mr. Ethan Carter," he said calmly.

"Age thirty-two."

"Chief Executive Officer of Carter Development Group."

The groom folded his arms.

"That's correct."

"Graduated with honors."

"Featured in business magazines."

"Named one of the city's fastest-rising entrepreneurs."

The groom smirked.

"So?"

The executive looked directly into his eyes.

"That is the public version."

The smile slowly disappeared from the groom's face.

The executive touched the screen.

A large monitor that had been prepared for the wedding slideshow suddenly lit up.

Instead of childhood photographs of the bride and groom...

Financial documents appeared.

The guests leaned forward.

"What is this?"

The executive continued.

"Three months ago, our chairman asked us to conduct a routine background review."

"We expected to confirm that you were an honest businessman."

"Instead..."

He changed the slide.

Bank transfers.

Shell companies.

Hidden accounts.

Dozens of transactions connected by red lines.

"We discovered over forty-seven million dollars that cannot be explained."

The crowd erupted into whispers.

"Forty-seven million?"

"That's impossible."

The groom immediately stepped forward.

"Those documents are fake!"

The executive remained calm.

"They were provided by federal investigators."

Another slide appeared.

This time it showed photographs of unfinished apartment buildings.

"Several of your housing projects accepted payment from families..."

"...yet construction mysteriously stopped after the money disappeared."

A woman standing among the wedding guests suddenly gasped.

"My brother invested in that project."

"He lost everything."

An elderly man raised his hand.

"My retirement fund was in there."

Another voice shouted from the back.

"My daughter was supposed to move into one of those apartments."

More people began recognizing the projects.

What had started as a fairy-tale wedding was quickly becoming something entirely different.

The groom looked around in disbelief.

"No..."

"No, you're twisting the facts."

"The market collapsed."

"The delays weren't my fault."

The executive nodded.

"That's what we believed at first."

He tapped the screen again.

A confidential email appeared.

Then another.

Then another.

Each carried the groom's digital signature.

One sentence stood out among all the others.

"Transfer investor funds before the inspection begins."

The silence became unbearable.

The bride covered her mouth.

She had never seen those documents before.

She slowly turned toward the groom.

"Ethan..."

"Tell me this isn't true."

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

She stepped closer.

"Look at me."

"Tell me they're lying."

Instead of answering...

He looked away.

That single movement shattered something inside her heart.

"You knew..." she whispered.

"You knew all along."

He finally spoke.

"I was going to fix everything."

"When?"

She could barely breathe.

"After the wedding?"

"After we had children?"

"After more families lost their homes?"

He reached toward her.

"You don't understand business."

She took a step back.

"No."

"I understand honesty."

"And I understand betrayal."

The old man quietly watched the exchange without saying a word.

There was no satisfaction in his eyes.

Only sadness.

He had hoped—truly hoped—that the investigation would prove the groom was a good man.

He had wanted the little girl he once saved to live a peaceful, happy life.

Instead...

The truth had arrived on her wedding day.

The government official finally stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter."

"You are not under arrest today."

The groom exhaled in relief.

But the official continued.

"However..."

"Our office has officially opened a criminal investigation based on the evidence submitted this morning."

The relief vanished instantly.

The groom staggered backward.

"This can't be happening."

The official looked at him steadily.

"It already is."

Just then, one of the younger executives received a phone call.

His expression changed immediately.

He hurried toward the elderly man and whispered something into his ear.

The old man's face turned pale.

He slowly closed his eyes.

The bride noticed the sudden change.

"What happened?"

The executive hesitated.

"Sir..."

"I don't think she should hear this now."

The old man opened his eyes again.

"No."

"She deserves the truth."

He turned toward the bride, his voice quieter than before.

"My child..."

"The investigation wasn't actually about your fiancé."

She frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The old man took a slow, painful breath.

"He only became involved because we were searching for someone else..."

"Someone connected to the fire that changed both of our lives."

The bride felt her heartbeat stop.

"The fire?"

"You mean..."

"It wasn't an accident."

The old man nodded once.

"No."

May you like

"It never was."

And with those words, the happiest day of her life became the beginning of a mystery that had been buried for more than twenty years.
