CHAPTER 1 – The Morning They Tried to Erase Me

CHAPTER 1 – The Morning They Tried to Erase Me

The first thing Olivia Bennett noticed wasn't the silence.

It was the smell.

Fresh hairspray.

Strong enough to sting her nose before she even opened her eyes.

She frowned and reached toward the nightstand for her phone, expecting to see the early morning glow through the curtains. Instead, her fingers brushed against something soft.

Hair.

A lot of it.

Her eyes flew open.

Dark chestnut strands covered the pillow beside her like scattered silk ribbons.

Her heart skipped.

Slowly, almost afraid of what she might discover, Olivia lifted a trembling hand to the back of her head.

Her fingers met air.

Then uneven layers.

Then patches so short they barely covered her scalp.

"No..."

The whisper escaped before she could stop it.

She scrambled out of bed, nearly slipping on more strands lying across the hardwood floor. Every step revealed another piece of what had once reached the middle of her back.

The mirror above her dresser reflected a stranger.

One side of her hair ended beneath her chin.

The other barely reached her ear.

Chunks had been hacked away without care, leaving jagged edges everywhere.

Tears blurred her vision.

Someone hadn't simply cut her hair.

Someone had wanted to humiliate her.

The bedroom door opened without a knock.

Her mother walked inside carrying a garment bag wrapped in white plastic.

"You finally woke up," Evelyn Bennett said casually, as though she were commenting on the weather.

She looked flawless.

Cream-colored pantsuit.

Pearl earrings.

Perfect makeup.

Not a single hair out of place.

Olivia stared at her.

"What happened to me?"

Her mother's eyes drifted toward the floor, where the chopped hair remained scattered.

"Oh."

She shrugged.

"It had to be done."

Olivia blinked.

"What?"

"You heard me."

"It... had... to be done."

The words landed with terrifying calm.

"You cut my hair?"

"We all agreed it was best."

"We?"

Before Evelyn could answer, another voice floated in from the hallway.

"I told her she'd overreact."

Victoria Bennett appeared wearing a silk robe embroidered with tiny white roses.

The bride.

Olivia's younger sister.

Tomorrow she would marry Ethan Ashford—the billionaire heir to Ashford Global Holdings, one of the most influential investment companies in the country.

Magazine photographers had followed the couple for months.

Luxury brands had sponsored parts of the wedding.

Every detail had been planned with military precision.

Including, apparently...

Destroying Olivia.

Victoria crossed her arms.

"I didn't expect Mom to leave it quite so uneven."

Olivia could only stare.

"You planned this."

Victoria sighed dramatically.

"Liv, don't make everything about you."

"You cut my hair while I was asleep!"

"I asked Mom for help."

"Help?"

Victoria stepped closer.

"You know what happened after the engagement photos."

Olivia remembered.

The photographer had posted three preview pictures online.

Thousands of people had commented.

Most congratulated the couple.

But one comment had gone unexpectedly viral.

The bride is beautiful... but who is the brunette standing behind her? She's stunning.

Another had followed.

Someone find the sister's Instagram.

Then another.

Main character energy.

Victoria had deleted every comment she could find.

Apparently...

That hadn't been enough.

"You embarrassed me," Victoria said quietly.

Olivia almost laughed.

"I was standing behind you."

"People noticed you."

"I wasn't even looking at the camera."

"It doesn't matter."

Evelyn placed the garment bag on the bed.

"This family has sacrificed too much to make this wedding perfect."

Olivia looked between them.

"So your solution..."

"...was assault?"

Silence.

Neither woman answered.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

Their father appeared seconds later.

Richard Bennett adjusted his expensive watch before speaking.

"Is everyone ready?"

His eyes landed on Olivia.

Then her hair.

Then the floor.

He frowned.

"You should've cleaned this up."

Olivia felt something crack inside her.

"That's your concern?"

"We don't have time for another scene."

"My hair is gone."

"It grows back."

"You let them do this."

Richard exhaled impatiently.

"I approved it."

Those three words echoed through the room.

"I approved it."

Olivia remembered every birthday she'd spent in Victoria's shadow.

Every achievement ignored.

Every apology she was expected to make after someone else hurt her.

This wasn't a mistake.

It wasn't impulse.

It was a family decision.

Richard continued.

"The Ashfords value elegance."

"They don't like distractions."

"You've always attracted attention without trying."

"We simply removed the problem."

Removed the problem.

Olivia realized he wasn't talking about her hair anymore.

He was talking about...

Her.

For years she had convinced herself that one day they would finally see her.

Respect her.

Love her.

Now she understood.

They never intended to.

A knock interrupted the silence.

One of the wedding planners stepped inside.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

"The florist is asking where Miss Olivia should be seated tomorrow."

Victoria answered before anyone else.

"Back row."

Olivia looked at her.

"I'm Maid of Honor."

"Not anymore."

Victoria smiled politely.

"I replaced you."

"With who?"

"Cassandra."

"My college roommate."

"She understands that tomorrow isn't about stealing attention."

Olivia's chest tightened.

Everything.

The hair.

The title.

Her place in the ceremony.

It had all been decided before she woke up.

She wasn't part of the wedding anymore.

She was simply expected to smile.

Richard handed her an envelope.

"Inside is a first-class ticket to Seattle."

Olivia frowned.

"What?"

"You'll leave after today's rehearsal dinner."

"I don't want unnecessary tension tomorrow."

"You don't want me at your wedding."

Victoria looked away.

"I want peace."

Olivia opened the envelope.

There really was a plane ticket.

Tomorrow morning.

7:10 a.m.

The exact time the bridal party would begin getting ready.

They had already erased her from the schedule.

From the photographs.

From the memories.

A strange calm settled over her.

She folded the ticket carefully.

Then slipped it back into the envelope.

"No."

Richard narrowed his eyes.

"No?"

"I'm not leaving."

"You don't have a choice."

Olivia met his gaze without flinching.

"For the first time in my life..."

"...I think I do."

She walked past all three of them.

No shouting.

No tears.

No slammed doors.

Just quiet footsteps echoing down the hallway.

Outside, the morning air was cool.

She climbed into her car and sat behind the wheel without starting the engine.

Her phone rested in her lap.

A notification appeared.

Unknown Number

"Ms. Bennett, this is Daniel Reeves from Ashford Global's Internal Compliance Office. We need to speak with you immediately regarding information connected to tomorrow's wedding. Your name came up during an internal review, and we believe you've been unknowingly placed in the middle of something much larger than a family dispute."

Olivia stared at the screen.

A second message arrived almost instantly.

"Please do not discuss this with anyone in your family. We are sending someone to meet you within the hour."

She looked back toward the enormous house where everyone was busy preparing for the wedding of the year.

Inside, they believed they had already won.

None of them realized that by tomorrow afternoon...

The wedding wouldn't be remembered for the flowers.

Or the billionaire groom.

May you like

Or the designer dress.

It would be remembered as the day hidden truths finally walked down the aisle.
