CHAPTER 3 – The Wedding Guest Who Wasn't on the List

CHAPTER 3 – The Wedding Guest Who Wasn't on the List

Olivia barely slept.

The blue folder, the secret photographs, and Daniel Reeves' warning replayed in her mind until sunrise.

Someone inside the Bennett house had risked everything to expose the truth.

Someone had secretly photographed her mother cutting her hair.

Someone wanted the wedding stopped.

But why now?

By late morning, the Ashford Estate overlooking the Atlantic buzzed with activity.

Luxury cars rolled through the gates.

Television crews waited outside the property for celebrity guests.

White roses lined the stone walkway leading to the glass chapel.

Inside, a string quartet rehearsed while wedding coordinators hurried from one task to another.

Everything looked flawless.

Only Olivia knew perfection was beginning to crack.

She arrived wearing a simple navy dress and a short, elegant hairstyle that a local stylist had managed to salvage from the damage. It wasn't the long hair she had loved, but she refused to hide beneath a hat.

The moment Evelyn Bennett spotted her, her smile disappeared.

"I told you to leave for Seattle."

"I changed my mind."

Richard stepped forward.

"You are not welcome here."

Olivia calmly held up her invitation.

"My name is still printed on the guest list."

Victoria approached, already dressed in a silk robe as makeup artists surrounded her.

"You really want to embarrass yourself?"

Olivia met her eyes.

"No."

"I just don't plan on disappearing anymore."

Victoria's expression hardened.

Before she could respond, one of the wedding coordinators rushed over.

"Miss Bennett, the groom's family is asking for you."

Everyone froze.

"My family?" Victoria asked.

The coordinator shook her head.

"No."

"Miss Olivia Bennett."

Richard forced a laugh.

"There must be some mistake."

"I'm afraid not, sir."

Olivia followed the coordinator across the estate.

Inside a quiet library, Ethan Ashford stood beside a fireplace.

Without the photographers and expensive tuxedo, he looked less like the polished billionaire magazines adored and more like a tired man carrying too much responsibility.

"Thank you for coming," he said.

"You asked for me?"

"I did."

He motioned toward two chairs.

"I've heard... something happened yesterday."

Olivia instinctively touched her shortened hair.

"It wasn't an accident."

"So I've been told."

She studied him carefully.

"You knew?"

"I learned this morning."

His voice carried genuine disappointment.

"I wish someone had told me sooner."

Olivia hesitated.

"Why?"

"Because no guest at my wedding should ever be treated that way."

For the first time, she believed he meant it.

Ethan leaned forward.

"I also know you've spoken with Daniel Reeves."

Her eyes widened.

"He told you?"

"He reports directly to me."

Silence settled between them.

Finally Ethan spoke again.

"I've spent the last year trying to understand why money keeps disappearing from one of our foundations."

"You think my family is involved."

"I don't know."

"But I intend to find out."

Before Olivia could answer, someone knocked urgently.

A security guard stepped inside.

"Mr. Ashford."

"What is it?"

"We've located another anonymous package."

Ethan frowned.

"Where?"

"It was delivered to your office thirty minutes ago."

The guard handed him a sealed envelope.

Across the front were only six handwritten words.

Open before you say 'I do.'

Ethan carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a single printed sentence.

Ask Richard Bennett about Blue Harbor Holdings.

Ethan looked up slowly.

"Have you ever heard that name?"

Olivia shook her head.

"Never."

Daniel Reeves entered moments later.

"We've already checked."

"What did you find?" Ethan asked.

Daniel's expression turned serious.

"Blue Harbor Holdings doesn't officially exist anymore."

"It was dissolved five years ago."

"But..."

He placed several documents on the table.

"...its bank accounts never stopped moving money."

Olivia felt the room grow colder.

"How much?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Nearly forty-eight million dollars."

Ethan stared at the figures.

"Who owns it?"

"We're still tracing the paperwork."

Another silence followed.

Then Ethan closed the folder.

"The wedding goes ahead."

Olivia looked surprised.

"After this?"

He nodded once.

"If whoever is behind this believes everything is proceeding as planned..."

"...they're more likely to make a mistake."

Daniel understood immediately.

"You want to catch them in the act."

"Exactly."

Meanwhile, across the estate, Richard Bennett watched through a second-floor window as Olivia left the library.

His face turned pale.

Victoria noticed.

"Dad?"

"She was meeting Ethan."

"So?"

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he pulled out his phone.

His call was answered immediately.

"They've started asking questions."

A pause.

"No."

"I don't think she knows everything."

Another pause.

Richard's jaw tightened.

"I'll handle it before the ceremony."

Unknown to him, the conversation wasn't private.

Behind an open service door, the elderly housekeeper quietly stood holding a tray of champagne glasses.

She recognized only one phrase.

"I'll handle it."

It reminded her of another conversation she had overheard months earlier.

One she had never forgotten.

An hour before the ceremony, guests began taking their seats inside the glass chapel.

The ocean sparkled beyond the windows.

Everything appeared picture-perfect.

Then Daniel's phone vibrated.

A message from the anonymous sender.

Only one photograph.

It showed the locked drawer inside Richard Bennett's home office.

The drawer was open.

The blue folder was gone.

Beneath the image appeared a chilling message.

You're looking in the wrong place.

Someone already has the evidence.

Daniel immediately looked toward Ethan.

"We've got a new problem."

Ethan read the message once.

Then looked across the chapel toward the front entrance, where more guests continued arriving.

"If the evidence is already here..."

"...then whoever took it is about to walk into this wedding."

Neither man realized that, only a few rows away, an elderly woman dressed in a simple gray suit quietly clutched a worn leather handbag against her chest.

Hidden inside the bag...

May you like

was the missing blue folder.

And she had no intention of leaving until the truth was heard by everyone.
