CHAPTER 2 – The File They Never Wanted Her to See

CHAPTER 2 – The File They Never Wanted Her to See

Olivia sat motionless behind the steering wheel, reading the message for the fifth time.

Ashford Global's Internal Compliance Office.

The words felt unreal.

She had never spoken to anyone from Ethan Ashford's company. She had spent months avoiding the endless wedding planning, smiling politely through family dinners, and pretending not to notice how every conversation revolved around Victoria's perfect future.

Why would anyone from the groom's company want to meet with her?

Another text appeared.

"We're outside the Lakeside Café on Harbor Road. If you feel unsafe, come now. We'll explain everything."

Olivia started the engine.

Twenty minutes later she parked outside the quiet café. A silver SUV waited nearby.

A man in a charcoal suit stepped out first.

Behind him came a woman carrying a slim black briefcase.

"Ms. Bennett?" the man asked.

She nodded cautiously.

"I'm Daniel Reeves."

He showed an identification badge bearing the Ashford Global logo.

The woman did the same.

"Angela Kim. Corporate Compliance."

Olivia crossed her arms.

"If this is about the wedding, I'm really not interested in more family drama."

Daniel exchanged a glance with Angela.

"It isn't."

"It's about fraud."

The single word stopped her cold.

They sat in a private booth near the back of the café.

Daniel slid a sealed folder across the table.

"We've been conducting an internal investigation for nearly eight months."

Olivia frowned.

"Into what?"

"A charitable foundation connected to tomorrow's wedding."

She blinked.

"The Ashford Family Children's Foundation?"

Daniel nodded.

"You've heard of it."

"Everyone has."

Victoria had bragged constantly that the wedding guests were donating to the foundation instead of bringing extravagant gifts.

Magazine articles praised the foundation's work with children's hospitals and scholarship programs.

It looked spotless.

Daniel opened the folder.

"It isn't."

Inside were financial statements, photographs, emails, and highlighted bank transfers.

Millions of dollars.

Offshore accounts.

Shell companies.

Fake invoices.

Olivia looked up.

"I don't understand."

Angela leaned forward.

"Someone has been moving foundation money into private investment accounts."

"Who?"

"We don't know yet."

"Then why am I here?"

Daniel turned another page.

A familiar name appeared.

Bennett Event Consulting.

Her father's small consulting company.

Olivia's heartbeat quickened.

"That's impossible."

"We hoped so."

Daniel pointed to several signatures.

"Your father's company received consulting payments totaling 2.8 million dollars over the last three years."

"My father barely has five employees."

"Exactly."

Olivia shook her head.

"He couldn't manage projects worth that kind of money."

"We agree."

Angela placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Richard Bennett shaking hands with a distinguished older man.

"Who is that?"

"Charles Whitmore."

"The foundation's chief financial officer."

Olivia stared at the image.

Her father had claimed he barely knew anyone from the Ashford family before Victoria became engaged.

Apparently...

That wasn't true.

Daniel continued.

"We believe tomorrow's wedding was supposed to finalize another financial arrangement."

"What kind?"

"A trust."

Olivia remembered overhearing snippets of conversation during the rehearsal planning.

Lawyers.

Documents.

Signatures scheduled for the wedding weekend.

She had assumed it was routine.

Now she wasn't so sure.

Daniel watched her carefully.

"There's something else."

He pulled out one final photograph.

Olivia's breath caught.

It showed Victoria leaving a downtown office building with Charles Whitmore only three weeks earlier.

Not Ethan.

Not wedding planners.

The foundation's CFO.

"They know each other?"

"They've met several times."

Olivia whispered, "Why?"

"That's exactly what we're trying to find out."

Silence settled over the table.

Finally Olivia looked up.

"Why tell me?"

Daniel answered honestly.

"Because every witness we've interviewed describes you the same way."

She frowned.

"As what?"

"The only member of the Bennett family who consistently refused to participate in financial discussions."

Angela smiled gently.

"You also never accepted money from your father after college."

Olivia nodded slowly.

"I wanted to build my own career."

"We know."

Daniel closed the folder.

"And this morning..."

He hesitated.

"...someone sent us photographs."

He handed over his phone.

Olivia's stomach dropped.

There she was.

Asleep.

Her mother standing over the bed with scissors.

Another image showed Victoria watching from the doorway.

The photos had clearly been taken secretly.

"When were these taken?"

"At 6:17 this morning."

"Who took them?"

"We don't know."

"But whoever did also included a message."

Daniel read it aloud.

"If they'll do this to their own daughter, imagine what they'll do to protect their secrets."

A chill ran through Olivia.

Someone inside the house had witnessed everything.

Someone who wanted the truth exposed.

Angela spoke softly.

"Ms. Bennett..."

"We believe cutting your hair wasn't only about jealousy."

Olivia frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"They wanted you gone."

The words landed harder than anything else that morning.

Daniel nodded.

"If you left before the ceremony, there would be one less unpredictable person around when the documents were signed."

Olivia thought about the airline ticket.

The sudden removal from the bridal party.

Being sent across the country.

It hadn't simply been cruelty.

It had been strategy.

"So what happens now?"

Daniel answered without hesitation.

"We keep investigating."

"And tomorrow?"

"We'll be there."

"As guests?"

A faint smile crossed his face.

"Something like that."

He slid a business card toward her.

"If anyone pressures you to leave today, call me."

Olivia slipped the card into her purse.

"For the first time today..."

"...I don't feel crazy."

"You were never crazy," Angela replied.

"You were isolated."

As Olivia stood to leave, Daniel spoke again.

"One more thing."

She turned.

"If Ethan Ashford asks to speak with you privately..."

"Say yes."

"You know Ethan?"

"We know he has no idea what's happening around him."

Outside, clouds gathered over the harbor.

Olivia climbed into her car, still gripping the folder.

Across the street, a black sedan sat parked beneath a row of maple trees.

Its windows were tinted.

Inside, someone lowered a camera.

Click.

Another photograph.

The driver picked up a phone.

"She's met with Compliance," a man's voice said quietly.

A pause.

Then he listened.

"I understand."

He ended the call.

Started the engine.

And drove back toward the Bennett estate, where final preparations for the billionaire wedding continued.

Inside the mansion, Victoria stood in front of a mirror while a stylist adjusted her veil.

Her mother entered, smiling.

"Everything's under control."

Victoria glanced toward the window.

"What about Olivia?"

Evelyn smiled with complete confidence.

"She won't be a problem."

Neither woman noticed the housekeeper quietly stepping into the hallway.

Hidden beneath her apron was a small digital recorder.

The tiny red light was blinking.

Still recording.

Still collecting every word.

And upstairs, in Richard Bennett's locked home office, a blue folder labeled CONFIDENTIAL sat inside an unlocked desk drawer.

No one realized that before the day was over...

May you like

Someone would steal it.

And that single folder would become the reason investigators walked down the aisle instead of ordinary wedding guests.
